This week gives Space Invaders its overdue revenge and a classic side-scrolling shooter its second date with the Virtual Console.
    WiiWare
  • Space Invaders Get Even (Taito, 500 Wii points): My, how the tables have turned. In this classic remake, you'll take control of the UFOs, blasting relentlessly at the poor defenseless humans. Make use of five different attack types and then hop online to see where you stand in the rankings.
  • Pit Crew Panic! (Hudson Entertainment, 800 Wii points): In Pit Crew Panic! you're in charge of repairing vehicles on the race track. Use your Wii remote to hover over the damaged part and then assign a crew member to take care of it. Up to four players can take part in various game modes.
    Virtual Console
  • Metal Slug 2 (1998, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): The sequel to the side-scrolling military action classic is now available on the Virtual Console. Following the winning formula from the original, Metal Slug 2 lets you blast your way through enemies with new weapons and effects.

This week introduces WiiWare to a rhythm-game while the Virtual Console gets a duo of RPGs and classic fighting game.

WiiWare

  • Helix (Ghostfire Games, 1,000 Wii points): With Helix comes one of the first rhythm-based games to grace the WiiWare arena. Use your Wii remote to hit various kinds of beats all in a colorful, mind-bending visual experience. Enjoy up to 26 songs with a number of different skill levels.
Virtual Console

  • Ys Book I & II (1989, Turbografx 16, 800 Wii points): Ys Book I & II is an intense RPG where you must uncover clues about a an kingdom. This download includes the first two titles of the series for the Turbografx 16 system.
  • Samurai Shodown II (1994, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): Samurai Shodown II is the sequel to the classic original and allows you to assume the role of one of 15 samurai all with individual quests. Use special techniques and moves to destroy your enemies in this landmark fighting game.

This week brings us a classic action platformer from the NES era.

WiiWare

  • Midnight Pool (Gameloft, 800 Wii points): Travel across America and compete in tournaments with a variety of different characters and locations. The game comes with three different play modes and adjusts to players of all skill levels.
Virtual Console

  • Mega Man (1987, NES, 500 Wii points): The classic platformer is now available for the Virtual Console. What many regard as the worst box art for a game ever is also the first game in a legendary generation that still continues today. If you've never completed the original we highly recommend it.
  • Neo Turf Masters (1996, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): Neo Turf Masters is a classic golf game released in 1996. Choose between six golfers and courses from around the planet.

Virtual Console

  • Chase H.Q. (1992, TurboGrafx-16, 600 Wii points): You, Tony Gibson, and your partner, Raymond Broady, are of two cops from the NYPD's special "CHASE H.Q." unit. It's your mission to catch criminals by chasing them and ramming them off the road in your unmarked car--all in 16-bit graphics glory.

  • Art of Fighting 2 (1994, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): 12 characters compete in the toughest fighting contest of them all: King of Fighters. The game is notorious for having some of the most difficult opponent A.I. in the long history of fighting game.

WiiWare

  • Pong Toss--Frat Party Games (JV Games, 2008, 800 Wii points): Think beer pong for your Wii remote, but without the table, stale beer, frat buddies, and the pretty ladies (unless you're lucky). You can either play in traditional mode or "Speed Pong," but you'll have to supply your own booze.

The classic ape makes a comeback and competitive eating gets its own game--all on the Nintendo Wii console.

Virtual Console

  • Donkey Kong 3 (1986, NES, 500 Wii points): Stanley the Bugman's greenhouse has been infiltrated by Donkey Kong. Armed with a can of bug spray, you must chase the ape away before he destroys the greenhouse.
  • Ninja Commando (1992, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): Ninja Commando is a top-down, vertical-scrolling shoot em' up, known for its unintentionally funny English translation.

WiiWare

  • Major League Eating: The Game (Mastiff, 2008, 1,000 Wii points): Based on competitive eating contests held by Major League Eating, the game features a number of rounds that cover twelve different foods.

  • King of the Monsters (1991, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): From SNK comes King of the Monsters, an action/fighting game that allows you to play as skyscraper-tall monsters in a worldwide battle to become the champion.

WiiWare

  • SPOGS Racing (D2C Games, 1,000 Wii points): SPOGS Racing is an arcade-style racing game that lets you upgrade your vehicle on-the-fly for instant advantages during gameplay.

A DS game reborn and a classic fighting game make up this week's releases.

Virtual Console

  • Fatal Fury 2 (1993, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): Fatal Fury 2 introduced brand new characters to the classic fighting game along with stage-specific interactive backgrounds. The game also revamped the two-line battle mode, possibly the most notable feature of the entire series.

WiiWare

  • Magnetica Twist (Nintendo, 1,000 Wii points): This new Magnetica game is a "twist" on the DS original--which itself was a port from a 1998 arcade puzzle game. In this updated version for the Wii, you'll be able to play with up to four players, each utilizing a Mii character.

WiiWare offers a new racing shooter or you can search for your long-lost brother in the Virtual Console update.

Virtual Console

  • Alex Kidd in Miracle World (1986, Sega Master System, 500 Wii points): Play as Alex Kidd in search of your brother, Egle. Make your way through 16 levels using "rock, paper, scissors" as one of your primary weapons.
  • Burning Fight (1991, NeoGeo, 600 Wii points): Burning Fight is a side-scrolling action game. Fight as Duke, Ryu, or Billy as you make your way toward the very evil Casterora.

WiiWare

  • Gyrostarr (High Voltage Software, 700 Wii points): Gyrostarr is an arcade-style shooter that allows you and up to three friends to race and battle alien ships at lightning-quick speeds. Enjoy 50 levels of intense action and use any Wii controller combination you like.

  • Block Breaker Deluxe (Gameloft, 800 Wii points): Block Breaker Deluxe is a brand new take on the classic brick-breaking arcade and portable games.
  • Cocoto Fishing Master (Neko Entertainment, 700 Wii points): Cocoto is a fishing master in search of five legendary fish. Use your Wii remote and nunchuk to reel them in while you battle massive bosses in five different lake-worlds.

Both WiiWare and the Virtual Console get a pair of additions this week.

Virtual Console

  • City Connection (1985, NES, 500 Wii points): City Connection is one of the first "chase" games to have you running from the law. Use your arsenal of various road-weapons to throw them off track in this unique action game based on the arcade classic.

  • Metal Slug (1996, NeoGeo, 900 Wii points): Metal Slug is the classic side-scrolling shooter where you take control of either Marco or Tarma and destroy everything in your way. Battle through a vast amount of levels as you try and take back the actual Metal Slug weapon.

WiiWare

  • Dr. Mario Online Rx (Nintendo, 1,000 Wii points): Dr. Mario is back and with a next-gen makeover! In Dr. Mario Online Rx, you'll be able to take Dr. Mario online or up to four players locally. There's also new game modes and co-op features that'll have you blasting capsules with friends.

  • Family Table Tennis (Aksys Games, 500 Wii points): Enjoy three modes of table tennis action including single player, versus, or mini-game. Family Table Tennis is fun for the whole family and can support up to two players simultaneously.
