Sony's turn to leak a laptop--the Vaio TT

by Dan Ackerman

We've seen a bunch of new laptop models from Sony in the past couple of weeks, including the 15-inch Vaio NS, the 14-inch Vaio CS, and the whopping 18-inch Vaio AW.

Sony's apparently has one more new laptop model in the offing (that we know of), and this one is on the opposite end of the spectrum from the 18-inch Vaio AW. It's the ultraportable 11-inch Vaio TT, and according to the online rumor mill, Sony is going to officially announce it sometime Monday.

Dell's new laptops leak (again)

(Credit: Engadget)

Surprising virtually no one, Dell has some top-secret new laptops coming out, and there's already a bunch of leaked docs about them floating around the Interwebs this morning.

The mainstream Inspiron line, currently sitting at the 1420, 1525, and 1720 level, is getting an upgrade with three new models--the 14-inch 1435, the 15-inch 1535, and the 17-inch 1735, according to Engadget. (At least they stick to a simple, relatively obvious naming system--now can someone please explain to me why HP's 14-inch laptop is called the 2700?)

These look like they have a tapered design and prominent side hinge that's similar to the well-regarded XPS 1330 and 1530 models, as well as slot-loading optical drives and capacitive touch buttons.

The leaked docs we saw give a release date of October for the 1435, May 26 for the 1535, and June 9 for the 1735.

More laptops leaks: Sony's VAIO NR laptop

Sony's leaked German spec sheet.

Leaks of new products are pretty commonplace these days (unless you're talking about Apple), and nowhere is that more true than the laptop scene, where pretty much every unannounced new product release is leaked, discussed, blogged, and photographed long before the first press release goes out.

The latest entry in the laptop leak-athon is the Sony VAIO NR, a 15-inch system that popped up briefly on Sony's German Web site before being pulled down. Notebookreview.com managed to grab the spec sheets in time, and even though they're in German, we still kinda like what we see.

There seem to be two versions--dark brown (which Sony calls wenge brown) and silver. Under "Spezifikationen," the brown model lists an Intel 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo T7250 CPU, Intel 965 chipset, 2GB of RAM, an ExpressCard slot, and a 200GB hard drive. There is some dispute in different online accounts about whether the silver version knocks the CPU back to a 1.5GHz T5250, or if it's identical to the dark-brown model. Since leaked tech specs are often dubious at best, we'll have to wait for official word--or at least better leaks--to say for sure.

With its deep, nearly black look and very thin profile, the VAIO NR has an almost-MacBook-like look, and with a purported starting price of around $899, we don't see any reason this couldn't be a successful addition to the U.S. VAIO line--but there are no reported plans to bring it stateside just yet.

Laptop leaks: Dell's new gaming rig

by Dan Ackerman

Imagine our surprise when we were surfing around the Web this weekend and found some alleged top-secret leaked info about a new upcoming 17-inch gaming laptop from Dell, reportedly called the XPS m1730.

Of course, after all the previous leaks about Dell's 13-inch m1330 and the rest of Dell's current laptop lineup, you'd think the company would pretty much expect this kind of thing.

In any event, our favorite French tech Web site, LesDeLLiens.com, reports that the XPS m1730 will be released (at least in France) on August 27, and it supposedly will offer Intel's new Core 2 Extreme X7800 CPU, a Blu-ray drive, SLI graphics, and even a separate number pad (something the current model, the XPS m1710, lacks). The same basic info is also reported on another site known for leaked laptop info, NotebookItalia.it.

Is this the Dell XPS m1730?

Of course, getting your tech scoops through roughly translated French and Italian Web sites is a notoriously sketchy business at best, so we'll just have to wait and see if this new model pops up on Dell's site around the end of the month.

Dell confesses: "We goofed"

by Dan Ackerman

If there's one thing tech companies hate, its leaks about upcoming products. We've been on the receiving end of a torrent of unauthorized info lately about some upcoming Dell laptops, from the nifty 13-inch XPS m1330 to a revamped line of colorful Inspiron systems.

After trying to plug the leaks and getting into a heated argument with The Consumerist (one of our favorite blogs) over a list of insider secrets supposedly from a former Dell sales manager, the PC giant is finally hitting the right notes.

On Dell's corporate blog, Direct2Dell, the company has posted its very own list of "23 Confessions," which includes an apology ("Ok, we goofed.") to The Consumerist as well as Confession #9, which cops to both the new Inspiron laptops and the formerly top-secret XPS m1330 ("We normally wouldn't have said this in the past, but we have some very cool PCs being introduced later this month.")

More Dell laptop leaks

It was only last week that we saw details on Dell's fancy new 13-inch XPS laptop leaked. If Dell has one new laptop coming out, surely they must have more, right?

Apparently the entire Inspiron line is getting a major makeover, according to the scuttlebutt on French Dell fan site (seriously) LesDelliens.com.

The folks over at Engadget have helpfully grabbed some of the details and translated the pages via Babelfish. The current Inspiron 1505 and 1705 will be replaced by the 1520, 1521, 1720, and 1721, plus a new 14-inch 1420.

The "20" models are all Intel Santa Rosa systems, all the way up to the 2.2GHz T7500, while the "21" models have AMD CPUs, topping out at the 2.2GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-64. You can also expect 802.11n and Blu-ray drives as an option in most of these laptops.

(Credit: lesdelliens.com)

From the pics we've seen online, the traditionally dowdy Inspiron line has gotten a bit of a makeover, and there seems to be a nice range of color options, including pink, red, green, and yellow.

No word on pricing or release dates yet, but stay tuned.
