The last Jeep we reviewed did not have a smoke machine as standard equipment
(Credit: CNET Networks)It looks like the bad guys are taking a leaf out of the Q Branch car-modification manual. According to the BBC, Mexican police have discovered a gadget-laden Jeep Grand Cherokee equipped with an onboard smoke machine and a device to scatter spikes in the road behind it in order to evade capture. The vehicle, which is believed to belong to members of a drug cartel, was abandoned in the northern Mexican state of Tamaulipas after a shoot-out. The SUV may not be on a par with the torpedo-launching, oil-spraying, mine-ejecting Lotus Esprit that Commander Bond used to his advantage in "The Spy Who Loved Me", but--aside from the Rinspeed sQuba--it's the nearest thing we've seen to a real-world Bond car.

The Jeep Liberty Sport has been redesigned for 2008 to look even more macho than its predecessor. The longer, wider, squarer, (and cheaper) Liberty gets an imposing front profile, some notable cabin tech options including Chrysler's MyGig system, and an available Sky Slider roof, giving all passengers an open-top driving experience. Check out our full review and video of the Jeep Liberty Sport.

Ahead of the 2008 Detroit auto show, Chrysler released sketches of three concept cars it will put on display. The cars come from the three main Chrysler brands, Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep, and offer a glimpse into the future of each make. A commitment to environmentalism and future power-train design is shown in that each concept runs on electricity.
2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon
(Credit: CNET Networks)Cargo space and performance are the most important car traits among those who post to CarGurus.com, a site that rates cars like TripAdvisor rates hotels.
The No. 1 rated car is the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, according to CarGurus.com's community ratings of the top 10 2007 models, with the 2007 Ford Mustang coming in at No. 2.
The 2007 Toyota Camry, which is known for its gas mileage of 31 mpg on the highway, was No. 3 followed by the also sensible 2007 Honda Accord. The 2007 Ford Focus was also on the list. Except for those three, all the other cars in the top 10 are either sports cars or trucks with relatively poor gas mileage.
None of the top 10 cars for fuel efficiency as rated by the EPA made it to CarGurus.com's top 10. The Toyota Prius came in at No. 15.
The Ford F-series pick-up, which was the best-selling car in 2006 according to a Forbes list, was No. 8 among CarGurus.com posts for 2007 models. The Ford F-150 gets about 15 mpg combined, according to its rating by the U.S. Department of Energy's fuel economy site.
Other cars in the top 10 for 2007 models were the Toyota Tundra, Honda CR-V, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Focus.
CarGurus.com's analysis is based on the ratings posted by 1.5 million unique visitors between January and June.

It might not have sails, or an anchor, or a mizzenmast (isn't that a great word?) but this Jeep is probably the most legitimate pirate vessel you'll see all day, unless you happen to be logging onto Crave from the beaches of Tortuga. This vehicle was spotted by blogger Andy Carvin on the roads of Washington, D.C. a few weeks ago. I like to think it's driven by a swashbucklers' rights lobbyist. (Special interests, my foot!)
Almost equally awesome is the license plate holder, which says "TOO CLOSE FOR CANNONS" on the top and "PREPARE TO BE BOARDED" underneath.

From Basra to Kabul, no environmentally aware burkha babe is going to be able to resist this 4x4, turbo-charged, hybrid, diesel-electric recon hotrod.
Created by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS,) the Shadow RST-V (Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Targeting Vehicle) boasts stealth, survivability and low mileage. That's big, considering that about half the military's money--and a third of its manpower--is devoted to hauling stuff around, 70 percent of that stuff being fuel.
The aluminum-bodied RST-V seats four (seating by Oregon Aero), does 70 mph and has a 470-mile range. Bulletproof windows and armor are optional. Weaponry includes your standard machine gun and grenade launcher, topped off by the Javelin anti-tank missile mounted on the roof. Recommended are the radar/laser warning receivers, likewise the GPS.
The electric stealth mode not only makes for a quiet ride, it also reduces the heat signature, allowing you to elude the infrared.
Narrower than a jeep, the Shadow still has a Hummer's cargo capacity, thanks to a patented, folding suspension system. It also puts out 30kw of electric power; enough to fire up a decent base camp at Burning Man. Did we mention it's a hatchback?
In the works since 1997, the RST-V should be ready in time for Iran.
All you Hemingway wannabes out there no longer have to freeze in the winter in your old drafty Defender. New, improved versions, resembling Papa's old British jeep, are finally on the way.
Soft-top 90s version of the Defender
(Credit: Land Rover)Rumors of a Land Rover Defender returning to the North American market are true. The car will be back in 2007 as a 2008 model. Soft-top, long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase versions are also "in the works," according to Atlantic British, which would probably know as the leading U.S. supplier of after-market parts for Land Rovers in the United States.
Land Rover wants to recreate the car as a "21st century icon," according to a company executive quoted by Atlantic British--with a few minor improvements of course.
The modifications for the 2008 Land Rover Defender will include the addition of the appropriate air bags, one of the reasons the Defender left the U.S. in the first place.
