Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse
(Credit: CNET Networks)The main competitor to Logitech's famed G5 gaming mouse, Razer's DeathAdder boasts better axial accuracy and greater customizability--differences which you may enjoy discovering in splendid detail over at sister site CNET Reviews. Please note, this mouse is made for right-handers, so lefties may have an issue with the thumb buttons. Check out the full review for information on system compatibility before you buy.
Not an avid gamer myself, I can only point out that the mouse sports an intimidating reptilian name and a neat glowing blue tri-snake-ular logo. Allow me to quote from colleague Rich Brown, who provides this far more useful overview:
"The good: The Razer DeathAdder gaming mouse has high accuracy and includes excellent customization software, and two responsive thumb-side buttons (righties only).
"The bad: No Vista driver despite claim of support on the box; no dedicated button for cycling through DPI settings on the fly.
"The bottom line: Razer's DeathAdder gaming mouse is a powerful accessory for fans of 3D shooters and others who might demand a high degree of customizability in their mice...the DeathAdder performs exceptionally well."

The last reference to a Microsoft Sidewinder product on CNET was back on an old must-have games roundup from 2002, where we pointed to a Sidewinder steering wheel. Microsoft seemed to have let its gaming hardware brand die since then; that is, until today's announcement of the Sidewinder Mouse. Available in October for $80, the new Sidewinder comes with the usual laundry list of features we demand in our high-end gaming mice these days, including a few we haven't seen before.
The Microsoft Sidewinder Mouse includes more features than any gaming mouse to date. Some even look useful.
(Credit: Microsoft)Naturally, the Sidewinder is a laser mouse, with a customizable sensor that tops out at 2,000dpi. It includes buttons on the mouse itself for swapping between sensitivity settings, as well as a weight kit, for those with the touch of a safecracker who demand mousing perfection.
None of those features are new in general, as Logitech has had them in its G5 Laser mouse for a while. What's new is a built-in LCD that tells you what dpi setting you're currently in, as well as the fact that the weight-carrying case doubles as a cable guide. Also, Microsoft includes two additional sets of "feet" aka different varieties of Teflon pads, for the underside of the Sidewinder, allowing you to customize the glide.
The LCD and cable guide feel a little superfluous, but we can imagine a finicky gamer playing around with the different feet. Hopefully we'll find out for ourselves soon.

Perhaps the best thing about this mouse is its name: DeathAdder. Now that's marketing.
The serpentine theme is continued with the blue logo of gaming gear maker Razer on the black mouse, which Electronista says delivers high performance with its "third generation infrared sensor." Other features include five programmable buttons and a Teflon base for quicker action that's obviously invaluable when you're blasting through enemy lines.
And even if you're only mildly into gaming, we think it would be the perfect accoutrement for those of us who multitask while watching our favorite episodes of Black Adder.
