The poor T-Mobile Dash has been pulling duty ever since October 2006, and while it's received a minor face-lift and Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade over the years, it's definitely time for the smartphone to retire. More importantly, T-Mobile customers need and deserve something more up-to-date, and it looks like the T-Mobile Dash 3G is set to deliver.
First announced for the carrier on June 17, T-Mobile revealed on Wednesday night that the Dash 3G will be available starting July 8 for $169.99 with a two-year contract. For that price, you get a number of welcome additions, such as GPS, a better camera, and 3G support. In addition, the smartphone's design is way better than Sprint's variation. But does the device deliver in performance?

(Credit: T-Mobile)For those of you who don't care about a certain phone from a certain fruit-flavored company, you might be interested to know that T-Mobile announced on Wednesday the upcoming availability of its latest smartphone, the T-Mobile Dash 3G.
The Dash 3G is T-Mobile's take on the HTC Snap, which debuted at CTIA 2009. The carrier expects the smartphone to ship nationwide in July, though it did not release a specific date or pricing at this time. Sprint also announced that it will offer the HTC Snap on June 21 for $149.99 with a two-year contract, so we assume T-Mobile's pricing will be similar.
While behind Sprint, we're just happy to see a replacement for the old T-Mobile Dash. As the name suggests, the handset supports T-Mobile's 3G network and also includes GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi. The T-Mobile Dash 3G will run Windows Mobile 6.1 and also offers a full QWERTY keyboard and support for personal and corporate e-mail.
In addition to the Dash 3G, T-Mobile also said that it will reveal more details about its news Google Android device next week. Perhaps, we'll see the official unveiling of the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G?

(Credit: Corinne Schulze/CNET Networks)As many of you know, the world of tech can be such a frustrating waiting game. Companies will tease you by announcing a hot little product, but it can be months and months before it actually comes to market. Take the HTC Cavalier S630, for example. The successor to the T-Mobile Dash already has passed FCC tests but we're still waiting for an official carrier and availability announcement. Lucky for us, we were able to get an unlocked version of the Windows Mobile 6 smart phone from Mobile Planet, so take a look at our slide show, and check back tomorrow for a full review.
HTC Omni
(Credit: Unwired View via Engadget Mobile)What's this? A non-iPhone news item? Yes, believe it. And if the rumors are true, then we've got some really craveworthy gadgets here. First up is the HTC Omni (rendering pictured right). The supposed upgrade to the HTC Universal (which sadly never landed here in the States) and related to the HTC Advantage, the Omni is said to have a 4-inch, 800x480-pixel WVGA display and VGA and TV outputs. In addition, the Windows Mobile 6 device is equipped with GPS, UMTS/HSDPA, Bluetooth, a 400MHz Samsung SC244X processor, 128MB of RAM, and a full QWERTY keyboard. Again, the image is just a rendering and there's no word on when or if the Omni will see the day of light, but mama mia, I hope so!
HTC Cavalier
(Credit: Engadget Mobile)While the Omni seems more like a pipe dream at this point, here's something a little more concrete. According to Engadget Mobile, the HTC Cavalier, the successor to the beloved T-Mobile Dash, has won FCC approval, clearing the way for a U.S. release and adding a key ingredient: 3G support. There's no official word on availability or carrier, but if we had to guess, we'd say it'll be AT&T. Perhaps a little something, something for the AT&T business customers who couldn't be satisfied by the iPhone?
T-Mobile Dash
(Credit: CNET Networks)Well, it's about gosh-darn time. T-Mobile Dash owners can finally get their hands on some Windows Mobile 6 goodness now that T-Mobile has officially announced the availability of the software upgrade. Starting tomorrow, Dash owners can go to T-Mobile.com and download the WM6 Standard Edition update for free. Among other things, the new OS brings:
- Easier e-mail setup and an e-mail search function
- Support for popular IM clients including AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, and Windows Live Messenger
- Full Microsoft Office Mobile suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) with editing capabilities
- New Calendar ribbon
Woo hoo! Upgrade successful
(Credit: CNET Networks)We got an advanced release of the software update and had no problems downloading or installing it to our Dash (look for our slide show tomorrow). Overall, the process took about 15 minutes, and we were able to synchronize our data, work on Office documents, set up our Yahoo e-mail account on the device, IM, and more. We think it's worth the upgrade, and why not? It's free. Just remember to back up your data from the Dash to your computer before you get started.
