If you've seen our Holiday Gift Guide, you'll notice the oh-so-desirable Red One modular videocam, which costs a staggering $17,500. Well, now you don't have to fork out so much for a Red system. The company has just announced the availability of the Scarlet 2/3, an affordable 3k-resolution video camera. That is, if you find $4,750 cheap.
Red initially unveiled this vidcam late last year with a price tag of $3,750 for just the body and a lens. However, the firm recently added more features to the modular system to justify for the $1,000 price bump.
Users will get a 2/3-inch sensor, 2.8-inch touch screen, CompactFlash card module, RedMote Pro, battery, and charger. The shooter has a fixed 8x optical zoom lens, but if you're looking to use your own glass, the firm is offering a kit with the body and lens adapters for Red, Canon and Nikon optics at a mere $2,750. LG's "Scarlet" range of televisions are causing quite a buzz. Is it the massive marketing campaign? Is it the intrusive red color that the back of the TV is finished in? Could it in fact be the glowing red/white hole on the front of the TV? Whatever it is, people want to know about this TV, so we got LG to send us one, and we've taken some photos of it.
We're looking at the 32-inch model, so it's only a 720p TV, which is fine for most uses, and we suspect that people who buy this sort of TV aren't going to be specification hounds anyway. That said, it does have four HDMI sockets, which is exceptionally generous. You'll also find two Scarts, component in and VGA in for PCs. See our gallery here.

If you've been tramping around the Internet much recently you will almost certainly have seen adverts about a hit new TV show called Scarlet. It turns out that there was no hit show at all, and it was all a big publicity stunt for a new LG TV "series" (meaning range) called Scarlet. There was even a party at some vile, trendy dive in Central London that caused one TV reviewer to launch into what can only be described as a Kermodian rant.
The TV is called Scarlet because it has some distinctive red highlighting, and because 'red' has already been taken by a much better cause. The rear of the TV is totally finished in red, and at the front there's a small circle cut out of the bezel, which contains a red "eye." It looks smart, and it's clearly designed for people who want a talking point for their lounge as well as a television.
From a features perspective, it's well-endowed TV. Available in 32, 37, 42, 47 and 52 inches, all but the 32-inch are 1080p. The 52-inch model has 120Hz smooth motion support, with the 42- and 47-inch models going to 100Hz and the smaller 32- and 37-inch screens only having lowly 50Hz panels.
The TVs also have something called Green EYEQ, which is supposed to reduce the TV's power consumption drastically. The eye-ring in the middle of the TV is a light sensor, which dims the LCD backlight depending on the ambient lighting.
As for sounds, the Scarlet features the now popular "invisible speaker system" that means the TV's frame is unbroken by ugly speaker grilles. To speaker and audio systems are tweaked by audio expert Mark Levinson, and include 'Clear Voice' mode--designed to increase the clarity of dialog.
All in all, it's not a bad-looking TV range. It's just a shame about the overblown and frankly tedious viral marketing campaign that surrounded the whole thing.
