Let there be light
(Credit: Crunchgear)Motorola is up to new tricks with its recent patent for a cell phone display that doubles as a solar cell. Apparently, the screen will be able to charge a cell phone's battery when the display is exposed to the sun. Though external solar-powered battery chargers are a reality, this is the first concept we've seen for a cell phone with an integrated solar panel. It's doubtful the phone would get all its juice from the sun. Rather, sunlight probably would power the handset while it's away from an electrical outlet. We have no idea which phone model Moto would outfit with the technology, but it appears a Razr Maxx Ve showed up in the patent filing.

By this point, most of the big product and service announcements have already been made, but that doesn't mean the show's over people. No, no. There were still cell phones to be seen, accessories to be touched, and smart phones to be examined. Plus, with all the madness of opening day over with, we were able to spend more time scouring the show floor looking for those hidden treasures that are sometimes overlooked. So, here's a roundup of today's news.
Cell phones: Verizon Wireless added a couple of attractive flip phones to its lineup today. Nicole Lee is dialed into the scene and has all the juicy details on the LG VX8700 and the Motorola Razr Maxx VE. Speaking of Motorola, the company also introduced four new models to its Motomobile line, proving you don't have to pay a premium for a stylish cell phone. And sneaky Sony Ericsson had a couple of extra handsets at its booth that weren't featured in our line show, but eagle-eyed Kent German spied them and got the dirt on the Sony Ericsson Z550 and K810 Cybershot.
Samsung Ultra Smart F700
(Credit: CNET Networks)Smart phones: I met up with the team from Windows Live for Mobile this morning, and looks as if they've been busy adding new features like local search and a revamped MSN Mobile site to Windows Mobile 6. Also, I was so excited to get my hands on the Samsung Ultra Smart F700, but there's really only so much I could say about a nonworking model. Sigh.
LG MSB-100
(Credit: LG)Accessories: Finally, Nicole scoped out some cool accessories, ranging from the BlueAnt Wireless Supertooth Light speakerphone to LG's cool Bluetooth speakers to a trio of new Cardo Bluetooth headsets.

Motorola Razr Maxx Ve
(Credit: Motorola)Aside from the LG VX8700, Verizon has also announced the availability of the Motorola Razr Maxx Ve today. Quite possibly the most appealing Razr on the CDMA front, the Razr Maxx Ve is built of metal and glass and is only 0.59-inch thick. Its features are dazzling as well, and they include a 2.0-megapixel camera, a music player with access to V Cast Music, stereo Bluetooth, V Cast Video support, 60MB of internal memory plus a microSD card slot, text and multimedia messaging, GPS capabilities with access to VZ Navigator, and of course EV-DO support for all that streaming content. It is available exclusively through Verizon for $199.99 with a two-year service agreement, after a $50 rebate. The Razr Maxx Ve will be available both online and in Verizon stores starting April 24.
Motorola Razr Maxx Ve
(Credit: Howard Forums)We know the HSDPA Motorola Razr V3xx is coming to AT&T/Cingular but we still haven't heard anything regarding U.S. carrier availability on the equally powerful Motorola Razr Maxx. And that's too bad as the Razr Maxx promises to be the most appealing Razr to date.
But now it appears we may get our wish, just in a different form. Howard Forums has published marketing photos of a promised EV-DO variant of the phone, the Maxx Ve for Verizon Wireless. Details are sketchy at this point but it's rumored the Maxx Ve will offer a 2-megapixel camera and a microSD card slot. V Cast video and music support should be onboard as well but apparently it won't be compatible with Verizon's new V Cast TV.
