Nokia today announced three new handsets--the E72, 5530 XpressMusic and 3710 fold--at the annual Nokia Connection 2009 in Singapore. The event was held at the Raffles City Convention Centre on Monday, a day prior to annual infocomm and technology show CommunicAsia 2009.

The E72 is modeled after the E71 with a full QWERTY keyboard, but comes with an optical navigation key, upgraded 5-megapixel camera and 3.5mm audio jack. This makes it the second E-series smartphone (the first was the E63) that lets the user plug in his favorite headsets sans an adapter. It also has dedicated buttons to activate the Bluetooth and torch function on the bottommost row of the keyboard, resulting in a smaller space bar.

Following the 5800 XpressMusic and the recently launched N97, the 5530 XpressMusic is the third Nokia handset that runs the Symbian S60 fifth-edition software. The touch-screen smartphone now has an enhanced Contacts bar for a maximum of 20 people, up from four on the 5800 XpressMusic. Unlike the latter, which has a plastic build that gives it an entry-level feel, the 5530 XpressMusic will have a stainless-steel finish.

Rounding up the trio is the 3710 fold clamshell that packs a 3.2-megapixel camera with flash, assisted GPS, along with access to the Ovi store and a new S40 interface.

At the event, the company also identified the emerging markets as the next key growth sector. "The next phase of growth will be very much driven by the emerging markets, including Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Vietnam," the vice president of Sales in Southeast Asia and Pacific for Nokia, Chris Carr, said in a statement.

According to a recent Gartner report, Nokia has a 36.2 percent market share worldwide with mobile phone sales of approximately 97.4 million units in the last quarter. This is a dip from 39.1 percent and 115 million, respectively, compared with the same quarter in 2008.

Two of the three phones--the E72 and 5530 XpressMusic--will be available in Q3, while the 3710 fold is expected to hit the markets in the last quarter of the year.

Nokia E72 (front)

Nokia on Monday unveiled the E72, the successor to its popular E71 business handset.

The updated version of Nokia's QWERTY-keyboarded candybar phone includes an optical navigation key. According to Nokia vice president Ilari Nurmi, the new input method allows for "more intuitive scrolling through menus, e-mails and fast panning of images."

Another enhancement visible on the front of the Series 60 phone is the ability to turn the handset into a flashlight with a single press of the space bar key.

The E72's camera is a 5-megapixel affair, while the E71 only had a 3.2-megapixel camera. The device also appears to have a new speaker at the back of the phone.

Nokia says the E72 uses active noise cancellation to make calls clearer. The handset also has a 3.5mm headphone jack -- unlike its predecessor -- so standard headphones can be used without an adapter.

In terms of its dimensions, the E72 is almost identical to the E71 -- it is the same height and thickness, but is 1mm wider and a gram heavier.... Read more

Nokia E75 set to debut at GSMA 2009?

by Bonnie Cha

Nokia has yet to announce its Nokia E75 smartphone, but there's mounting evidence that the device will soon become an official member of the family, perhaps at GSMA Mobile World Congress in February.

Nokia E75 (Credit: Daily Mobile)

CNET Asia first reported on some leaked video (which has now been taken down) of the Symbian handset, as well as the Nokia E72, back in September 2008, but on Friday, the buzz kicked up again after the Swedish site Daily Mobile posted some pretty legitimate-looking photos of the E75.

The Nokia E75 looks to be similar in design to the HTC S743 in that it has a compact candy bar shape with an alphanumeric keypad on the front, but then slides open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. (The pictured model is apparently a German version of the phone, hence the QWERTZ format.) Specs are pretty light at this point, but some reported features include a 2.4-inch screen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, integrated Wi-Fi, and HSDPA support.

The popular belief is that Nokia will announce the Nokia E75 at the Mobile World Congress 2009, which kicks off February 16 in Barcelona, Spain. Both Kent German and I will be there again this year to cover the show so we'll certainly report on any news as it occurs.
