The Memorex TouchMP brings touch-screen tech to the penny-pinching masses.
(Credit: Donald Bell/CNET Networks)Touch screens are all the rage, gracing everything from cell phones to roulette tables. Trouble is, when you hear the words "touch screen" the dollar signs immediately start rolling in your head.
But you don't have to break the bank to get your hands some touch-screen tech. For just $99, the Memorex TouchMP offers a decent assortment of portable media player features powered by a zippy and practical touch-screen interface.
It's no iPod Touch, but for $99, the TouchMP isn't a half-bad choice for someone who's obsessed with touch-screen technology but doesn't need to carry around a $300 MP3 player. To find out more, take a look at CNET's full review and First Look video for the Memorex TouchMP.

Memorex unveils a $200 Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player
Blu-ray ran into plenty of consumer confusion regarding the differing Blu-ray profiles, but the good news is that almost all (excluding a few Philips players) of the new players we saw announced at CES 2009 are Profile 2.0 compatible. Memorex's new MVBD-2520 doesn't have any of the extra bells and whistles seen on LG's BD390 or Samsung's BD-P4600, but it does look to have the ...

Memorex: Leading the cheap Blu-ray charge.
(Credit: Buy.com)We've been keeping an eye on prices for Blu-ray players and it appears that a handful of budget brand models are starting to crack the $150 barrier. The other day Woot.com had the Memorex MVBD2510 player at $139.99 for a one-day sale and now TheNerds.net is selling it for $146.99 (shipping included) and Buy.com has it at $149.99. That's on top of both the Samsung BD-P1500 and the Sony BDP-S300 slipping in and out of sub-$200 territory at Amazon and other outlets.
While $150 isn't bad, I think we're going to see $99 fairly soon, with a couple of stops at $129.99. As we found out with HD-DVD players, $99 really is a magic price point, though it is worth pointing out that these budget Blu-ray players are only profile 1.1 while the $99 HD DVD players were fully up to spec and allowed for firmware upgrades via Ethernet (the cheap Blu-ray players can't be updated and sometimes simply can't play certain movies). Profile 1.1 players aren't BD-Live enabled, which means you won't be able to access certain interactive features--for better or worse.
If you're itching to hang an LCD or plasma HDTV above your fireplace but unwilling to shell out the cash for a full-motion mount, fear not, Memorex will save you from improper viewing angles. For $350 (or about half the cost of one of the company's 32-inch LCDs), you can put the safety of your 30-inch to 50-inch display in the hands of a company I still associate with cheap audio cassette tapes (though admittedly this is an unfair association against the Imation-owned brand and has nothing to do with the quality of this product).
Not only is the mount relatively inexpensive, Memorex claims the Lite Wall Mount is the world's thinnest full-motion wall mount, putting just 1.5 inches to 2 inches between the wall and your TV. The full-range motion lets it swivel (+/- 25 degrees), extend, retract, and tilt (down 70 degrees with a 32-inch display). It'll hold a TV up to 150 pounds, so LCDs and most plasmas less than 50 inches should work with it.
The Memorex Lite Wall Mount also features a "sophisticated cable management system" so your cords stay tucked away and includes all the hardware you'll need to get it up on the wall. It's available now and though I haven't tested it and I'm not endorsing it, it seems like a decent way to go if you need to get your tilt on.

The main knock against Blu-ray is that it's still too expensive, but lately we've seen a steady flow of basic, lower-priced players. Memorex is right in line with this trend with the recent of announcement of the MVBD-2510 Blu-ray player, which will have a relatively low list price of $270. Let's take a look at the specs released so far:
Key features of the Memorex MVBD-2510:
- Supports Blu-ray Profile 1.1
- Onboard decoding for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution
- Bitstream output for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio
- 5.1 multichannel analog output
- Available in November, with a list price of $270
From the spec sheet, the MVBD-2510 seems most comparable to Insignia's NS-BRDVD, which is currently selling at Best Buy for $230. The specs are essentially the same, with the Memorex adding 5.1 multichannel analog output for those with older, non-HDMI receivers. It seems like paying extra for multichannel outputs will only appeal to a niche audience, but we did have issues with the Insignia's Blu-ray image quality, so there is room for Memorex to improve. On the other hand, it may have more competition when its released, as we expect to see the prices of better, name-brand players dropping as the holidays approach.
With Blu-ray players getting closer to the $200 mark, we finally seem to be approaching the point at which it makes sense to go for standalone Blu-ray player over the multitalented PS3. While the PS3 is still a superior playback device--with Profile 2.0 support, excellent image quality, and superfast load times--these relatively inexpensive players mostly do a fine job of playing back Blu-ray movies at half the cost. That being said, with the price of Blu-ray movies still high and most cheap players still lacking Profile 2.0 support, we wouldn't be surprised of consumers continued to wait it out even longer.

With USB storage keys ranging from the ridiculous to the obnoxious, we were beginning to think that it was impossible to find one that we'd even consider buying. But leave it to a game of chance to restore what little faith we had in product marketing.
Memorex's "Poker Chip Flash Drive" is a bit late to the poker party that's become a national craze, but it makes up for much of that with an admirable design that conceals its 1GB key in what looks like a stack of three clay chips. In keeping with the theme, Engadget says, the USB drive includes "software to play Texas Hold 'Em right from your PC." If it arrives on schedule at Target this month, we'll go all in.
