LG Shine II
(Credit: LG)LG and AT&T announced Monday a successor to its LG Shine slider handset, the LG Shine II. It's just as glossy and reflective as its predecessor, complete with a 2.2-inch mirror LCD. Features include a music player with a customizable equalizer, stereo Bluetooth, the typical messaging features, GPS, and a 2.0-megapixel camera. The Shine II will be available starting November 22 for $119.99 after a mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement.

It seems as if the hype over Iron Man has been going on forever, so we're surprised that it's taken this long for someone to release a phone dedicated to the movie. (Side note: Are we the only ones who think Robert Downey Jr. is totally miscast?)
Like other promotional movie phones, including Homer Simpson's cellie, this customized LG Shine will bear the colors of its hero and include exclusive footage from the film. The main difference is that this handset is finished in 18k gold (not iron) and will be given away in an online drawing, according to Pocket-lint, which spotted it on display at the CTIA trade show in Vegas.
As for us, we're holding out for the next Superman movie to see if they issue phones made of kryptonite.
LG Shine at AT&T
(Credit: AT&T)Though the LG Shine may be a few months old, that didn't stop AT&T from adding the sexy (and shiny) slider phone to its holiday season lineup. AT&T's Shine is just about identical to the unlocked version of the phone that we reviewed earlier this year, but it offers a few changes. Specifically, LG redesigned the navigation array and it made AT&T's Shine slightly smaller and lighter. The thin profile remains, fortunately, as does the vibrant display. The feature set is also similar; inside you'll find a 2-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, a music player, USB mass storage, a speakerphone, a microSD card slot and quadband world phone support. That's a nice assortment of offerings by itself, but LG and AT&T raised the bar by including 3.5G HSDPA support and compatibility for the AT&T Music and Cellular Video media services and the carrier's AT&T Video Share application. The Shine is $199 with a two-year contract, but you can get it for as little as $74.99 if you buy it online. We'll have a review as soon as we can get one in our hands.

As we noted yesterday--much to our chagrin--gold is hardly waning in the gadget fashion world. In fact, as far as mobile phones are concerned, it seems to be as popular as ever.
Witness LG's new "Shine" slide phones for the European and Asian markets, according to Akihabara News. The handset will be available in pink as well, and a black version will reportedly be sold globally, but there's always something about the gold phones that seem to get all the attention.

If it seems that most mobile phones are either silver or black, there's good reason: Most are silver or black. Then there's LG, which is trying to split the difference between the two with a new finish called "Titanium Black."
Perhaps the company thought its designers had taken the name of its "Shine" line too literally and wanted to tone it down a bit. LG says the metallic-gray casing is "edgier than black and more chic than silver," according to Luxurylaunches, so it will provide "the best of both looks and will allow both men and women to shine." That's not exactly what lept to mind when we saw it, but we like the change anyway. (No offense to the Raider Nation; we don't want to get on their bad side, for obvious reasons.)
Aside from the color it has the same features as the original Shine, including a 2-megapixel Schneider Kreuznach camera, MP3 player and scroll wheel. The good news is that it's scheduled for release at the end of this month; the bad news is that it'll be in Europe. Crave will just have to scheduled a trip to Paris to pick one up. If only the Concorde were still flying.
LG KE770
(Credit: LG)LG has come up with a candybar version of their deliciously bling-tastic LG Shine phone, but it is unfortunately only available in Russia at this point. A lot of the specs remain the same as its slider phone predecessor; a 262,144-color screen, a 240x320 display, a 2-megapixel camera with auto focus, Bluetooth, and a microSD card slot. No word on whether the candybar Shine, also known as the LG KE770, will make its way across the Atlantic just yet, but we're keeping our fingers crossed.

LG's phone division appears to be going full-tilt into its metallic age, at least in South Korea. Two new models in its appropriately named "Shine" line have made appearances at the company's Digital Design Center in Seoul, according to Electronista.
The first version is a special gold edition of the slider handset destined for South Korea's CDMA networks. The second is the "Shine Folder," a clamshell alternative to the original that appears to resemble one we cited last month that some speculated was possibly headed for Verizon.

Unfortunately, neither of the models displayed in Seoul seems destined for North America at present. But if current metallurgic design trends continue, it probably won't take long.
LG Shine
(Credit: CNET Networks)We've mentioned the LG Shine before on Crave, but since we spotted it at CES, we have to mention it again. As a reminder, the LG Shine is a supersleek slider phone that looks like a mirror on the front when it's inactive. It looks a lot like a stainless-steel successor to the Chocolate, and it comes with a 2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, and a slim scroll wheel underneath its stunning 2.2-inch QVGA display. It's currently available only in Asia and Europe. Our LG representative said that it probably won't be coming our way in its current incarnation, but it may be altered slightly for U.S. markets. However, since there is currently a tri-band GSM version of the phone, you could attempt to import an unlocked version now. Check out our slide show of the Shine here to see better pictures of it.

Competition is usually a healthy thing in the marketplace, except when it comes to design. Companies have gotten so desperate to distinguish themselves that they too often resort to "special" or "limited editions," whether it be an 18k gold camera or a diamond-covered Mercedes. The result is often a monument to bad taste.
LG, thankfully, is an exception--and we're especially relieved because its new offering involves one of our favorite phones, the stainless-steel "Shine." The limited edition is essentially the same phone, save for a Korean poem engraved on the back in designer fonts, according to MobileWhack. We hope that other manufacturers will follow its understated elegance, but something tells us not to hold our breath.
