Palm Pixi clears FCC

by Kent German

Besides a slew of new LG phones, the biggest news out of the Federal Communications this week is the approval of the Palm Pixi. In light of its November 15 release date, the Pixi's appearance here is not surprising. We also spied the Google Android-equipped LG GW620.

Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. And to save you the trouble, Crave has combed through the database for you. Here are a selection of filings from the past week on new and upcoming cell phones. Click through to read the full report.

GSM Motorola Sholes hits FCC

by Kent German

We've been waiting a long time for the Google Android Motorola Sholes to clear the Federal Communications Commission, so you can imagine our disappointment when we saw just the GSM version of the handset get certification this week. It's the CDMA model for Verizon that we want, so we'll just have to hold out a little longer. The FCC also gave the nod to Acer's first crop of smartphones and the Nokia Booklet 3G. We know that the latter isn't a smartphone, but we threw it in anyway.

Because the FCC has to certify every phone sold in the United States, not to mention test its SAR rating, the agency's online database offers a lot of sneak peeks to those who dig. Holy cow, it was a busy week at the Federal Communications Commission! We sifted through 393 entries to find the cell phones and managed to find some notable models. Vertu offers its sure-to-be-pricey Constellation, Sonim promises a new rugged phone with the XP2 (there was a mysterious gap between the XP1 and XP3), Nokia sneaked through the X6 and a return of the 5800 Xpress Music, and Sony Ericsson got approval for its Yari and a new Xperia model.

Possible new iNQ Mobile handset hits FCC

Is this iNQ's new U.S.-bound handset?

(Credit: FCC)

It's time once again for us to reveal our FCC findings to you, and this week's standouts are the Sony Ericsson U100a and the Huawei Q1-200H, which bears the iNQ Mobile logo on it. To jog your memory, iNQ Mobile is a cell phone maker that promises to bring smartphone-level technology to non-smartphone devices. You won't get a full HTML browser or corporate e-mail per say, but you will get full social networking capabilities to Facebook and Twitter for example. So far, iNQ has been quiet about a U.S. presence, but perhaps this FCC filing points toward a potential U.S. carrier deal.
