Cricket recently announced a new basic camera phone dubbed the Captr (pronounced like "capture"). The flip phone only has a VGA camera, so it won't take great pictures, but it's OK if all you want is an entry-level camera phone.

The Captr has Bluetooth, voice dialing, and text and multimedia messaging. It'll also have Cricket's customizable home screen where you can add or remove widgets. The Cricket Captr is available for $129.99, but there is no contract required.

When we first saw the TXT8026 at the PCD (Personal Communications Devices) booth at this year's CTIA, we thought for sure it would be a successor to the Verizon Wireless Blitz--they're both square and slightly chubby, with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

Now it appears regional carrier Cricket has first dibs at the little messaging phone, and they've dubbed it the TXTM8, pronounced "textmate"--get it? Features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, voice recognition, a music player, and a microSD card slot. You can get it now for $159.99 without a contract.

Motorola Evoke comes to Cricket

The Evoke has a virtual keyboard.

Last month we complained that Alltel was being stingy with review models of the new Motorola Evoke QA4. Unfortunately, our griping did no good as we still haven't been able to take a good look at the touch-screen slider phone that debuted at CTIA.

Luckily, we got a nice note from Cricket Wednesday telling us a review model is on its way. Cricket will launch the phone Thursday for $299 ($279 if you buy online). Yes, that is a a little expensive, but keep in mind that you're getting the phone contract-free.

UTStarcom didn't have much of a presence at this year's CTIA, but it did sneak in an announcement of the AWS-enabled CDM-7126 handset for both Cricket and MetroPCS. The Cricket version is dubbed the CDM-7126C and the MetroPCS version is dubbed the CDM-7126M. They're both about the same, save for the look of the front surface. As for the phone itself, it's a pretty standard device, made for the entry-level market though it does have Bluetooth as well. The front surface is pretty unique in that there are LED indicators for incoming calls and text messages, as well as battery and signal strength without the need for an external LCD. The pricing and availability are not known yet, but we think both of these will debut pretty soon.

Cricket speaks Kyocera's Lingo

Kyocera M1000 Lingo

Is it just a candy-bar phone?

(Credit: Kyocera)

Though Kyocera made a big splash earlier this year at CTIA with some fancy new cell phones, carriers haven't exactly been rushing to pick them up. Or on the other hand, maybe Kyocera has just been fine-tuning its new toys.

Lyocera M1000 Lingo

Not at all.

(Credit: Kyocera)

But in any case, Cricket yesterday said it would offer the Kyocera M1000. Now called the Lingo, the M1000 offers much more than meets the eye. Though it may look like an ordinary candy-bar phone at first glance, it opens up horizontally (much like the LG enV) to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard for easy messaging. The Lingo is a tad boxy, and it doesn't offer the enV's 3G multimedia features, but it does have Bluetooth, a 1.3-megapixel camera, voice recognition, a loud, clear speakerphone and productivity tools like a scheduler, a calculator, an alarm clock, a stopwatch, a tip calculator, a countdown timer, and voice memos. Cricket chose the gold version, but the M1000 is also available in black. The Lingo is $199 with service. For more on the Lingo check out our CTIA video.

The following products mentioned are available.

'Solar Cricket' jumps for your (evil) joy

by Mike Yamamoto
  • Post a comment
(Credit: EcoCentric)

OK, so maybe you did have something to do with your uncle's coronary while navigating an RC tarantula his way at the dinner table. You'd be willing to downsize to a robot roach for future pranks, but you don't want to be in the vicinity because you'll get the blame (again).

Don't despair--a solution may be at hand. The "Solar Cricket" will take care of your mischief-making needs all by itself, energized by sunlight so that it can "waggle his feelers and do a little dance " when you're nowhere to be seen, according to Shiny Shiny, allowing you to manufacture the perfect alibi. Better still, as long as it continues to catch rays, the bot bug will also make annoying cricket sounds to ensure irritation all day long.

And you can do all this with a clear conscience, knowing that you've done your part to preserve natural resources.
