Archos GPS In-car Holder
(Credit: Archos)The Archos 605 WiFi PVP already does a lot of things. It's an MP3 player, a video player, a photo viewer, a PDF viewer, and a Web portal. Now, it can be your personal navigator. Today, Archos announced the GPS In-Car Holder, an add-on accessory that brings the features of a portable navigation system to the PVP. The GPS receiver is built into the car mount, so you can simply slide your 605 WiFi into the cradle and connect it to your windshield and car stereo (via line-out) to get real-time tracking and voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. Maps of North America are provided by TeleAtlas (a European and a Chinese version will also be available) and will include a points of interest database as well as traffic and lane assistance.
The Archos GPS In-Car Holder will work with all models of the 605 Wi-Fi and has an expected shipping date of sometime in May. Pricing starts at $129.99 or you can get a bundle package (30GB Archos 605 WiFi + GPS In-Car Holder) for $399.99.

Some industrious programmers have found a way to hack the Archos 605 WiFi portable video player to run the Qtopia Linux platform. By the looks of it, the Qtopia hack doesn't add much in the way of extra media features (the Archos does pretty well as-is), but it opens the door to developing the Archos 605 WiFi as a more generally useful and configurable tablet PC. The Qtopia hack appears to work on older models of the Archos players as well, although the Archos fifth-generation players seem to be easier to configure.
Personally, I think the Archos 605 WiFi is a cool enough gadget on its own, but there's always something to be said for hacking a gadget just to explore the possibilities. The video below should give you a better indication of whether the hack is worth voiding your warranty.

We've just posted full reviews of the (CNET Editors' Choice Award-winning) Archos 605 WiFi and Archos 405 portable video players and regardless of what next Wednesday's announcement reveals from the Apple camp, I think it's safe to say that these new Archos players will top more than a few holiday wish lists.

For starters, the 605 WiFi includes a shortcut for wirelessly downloading purchased or rented movies from Cinema Now, including all the content from Cinema Now's adult site (alladultchannel.com). iTunes is great and all, but I seriously doubt that Apple is ready to integrate porn into the squeaky clean iTunes universe. Secondly, both the 605 WiFi and 405 can switch between multiple USB modes, making them platform agnostic while maintaining their ability to play DRM-protected music and video content. Don't get me wrong, I love my iPod, but I also love companies like Archos that let my ripped DVD files and DRM-protected WMA files live on the same player.

So, someone over at Rolls-Royce trusted our Car Tech guys enough to lend them a 2007 Rolls-Royce Phantom to review. Wow--fancy! It even has a hood ornament that retracts into the hood when the doors are locked. Now no one will steal the "Spirit of Ecstasy" and make a necklace. Is car bling still cool? Is the word "bling" even cool?

We don't know how it happened, but Rolls-Royce let us borrow a Phantom for a few days. And not only did we find a place to plug in our iPod, we also found a navigation system hidden behind a clock, and a Bluetooth telephone system with a velvet-lined tray for our cell phone. CNET editors had a chance to spend some time with the new Archos 605 WiFi portable video player. So far, we think it looks like a real gem. And the new DVR interface is a drastic improvement over the previous VCR-style recording interface. Check out the Archos 605 WiFi.
As reported earlier, the new Archos PVPs are due out at the beginning of September. Unfortunately, Jasmine and I couldn't wait that long, so we contacted the product reps at Archos to schedule some one-on-one time.
