Craigslist to crack down on ads for erotic services

by Greg Sandoval

Craigslist will require anyone posting ads to the Web's site's "erotic services" section to submit a working phone number and credit card, the online classified publication said Thursday.

The new measures are the result of negotiations between Craigslist and 40 state attorneys general and are designed to thwart ads for prostitution and other illegal activities.

San Francisco-based Craigslist has long implemented electronic safeguards to prevent this kind of advertising, but an entire cottage industry has sprung up around selling software and other services that help circumvent the blocks, the company said in a statement.

"These businesses facilitate the placement of ads for illegal services that would otherwise be blocked by Craigslist's protective measures," Craigslist said in the statement.

Craigslist has also agreed to sue 14 of the companies accused of helping illegal advertisers to evade the site's defenses, the company said. The Web's largest classified section is also sending "cease and desist" letters to numerous other companies offering such services.

In March, Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal sent Craigslist's management a letter accusing the site of allowing users to post ads for prostitution in violation of its own terms of service. The company says, however, that it has a long history of cooperating with law enforcement and doing everything it can to prevent crime on the site.

GOOD! When is the government going to outlaw sex all together. Sex is a dirty, illegal act that should NOT be allowed EVER.

having to pay for sex is silly. Just get a girlfriend and stay safe. Many of those Craigslist ****** in my area have aids and other diseases. I know this because my friend is a cop.

Sigh..... when are people going to learn that it is just time to LEGALIZE prostitution and 'vice'. The only thing we are doing by NOT legalizing it is forcing it underground where anything can happen to the prostitutes or their 'johns'.

Gee guys! Get a hold of yourselves. The Germans have not only legalized prostitution - as long as it is controlled by regular health checks - but cities operate - in lack of another word let's call it - *********** which guarantees health checks.
The result is that sex crimes are a fraction of what it is in the U.S. on a per capita basis.

Noooo... This is best section of Craigslist. You can see so many freaks and see whats new and popular in the so secretive dirty and unchristianlike "erotic" world. That world is sooo dirty and could make us go blind. I may go blind because I don't blink while I constantly stare. Uhh ohh are my palms getting hairy? Should I go see a Priest? ... Oh what to do.. Where is the bible?

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal needs to start looking at real crime and stop being a retarded puritan moron more at home in the dark ages. Since when do normal humans with a rational brain outlaw pleasure but allow exploitation of women to flourish because of incompetent and stupid law enforcement coupled with even stupider laws not protecting those who need it most.

Try combating the real crime for once.

Craigslist has set a new president and added a level of respectability to its site. Today Craigslist has implemented a feature not to punish but to protect the females that post in their erotic section. Although lots of money will be generated from this change, this small contribution to there site is worth all they go through to insure the safety of its posters., plus they donate it . Hats off to you craigs.

See Craigslist Announcement:
http://blog.craigslist.org/2008/11/joint-statement-with-attorneys-general-ncmec/
The site Dontlookanyfurther.com does indeed still have a 100% free erotic ad section, and they will further continue to make steps to insure safety and make sure that no exploitation or trafficking is in existence on there site , and found in there ads. All suspected ads will be immediately erased by staff.

I offer this to many women or men who consider the sex business as the only way. Well its not. There are many ways to improve your situation and many organizations to assist you. If you are the subject of exploitation, please do yourself a favor, call the police and remove yourself from the company of those persons.

Let me get this straight: it's illegal to charge money for something that's FREE to give away. Hmmm, call me crazy but I'm thinking they might have some recurring issues with enforcement. I'm pretty sure prostitution has been around for quite some time... Wealthy women prostitute themselves by marrying men they don't love for money. I wonder when the cops are going to get around to investigating these high class ******. Whoops, I forgot. These laws are designed to harass poor people. Nevermind.

You get lots of pranksters whos aim is to destroy craigslist.
everytime I put an ad out just for some casual sports to meet women for tennis I keep getting pictures of super ugly men wanting to meet me.

My ad was in the activity partner women only but its so sad when people abuse the system. I would like to meet those pranksters and teach them a lesson.

I agree that Porn on the internet is getting totally out of hand. Sex is suppose to be one of those things you do in private, publicly showing nudity and other forms of sex on public domain or to have to pay for is just ridiculous. I do think that Craigslist is complete garbage now, because they change every blasted thing about their service. Just because 2-3 people are irritated cause they have to look through certain ads, they change their stuff around. If I owned CL I would never listen to these complainers, I'd send them an email saying, don't like it, live with it, GEEZ the service is about posting FREE stuff. You never have to pay for the ads, so the logic should go, if you're looking at it and don't like it, then avoid the category all together, lots of free ad sites get ruined because people fail to see the part about it being a free service. Don't like what you see on CL or other free services, tough, live with it.

At least prostitution is up front about the costs.

Dates to get sex almost invariably cost more.

And God help us all, there's nothing cheap about getting married!

WOW

2 months have passed since the last post.

"Craigslist to crack down on ads for erotic services" article brought me here in my search from Atlanta, GA.
You'll probably never gonna believe what I've got to contribute... so here goes...

I'm a Georgia licensed massage therapist who is calling all GA LMTs to join me with a battle at the Atlanta Therapeutic Services (non-erotic) Board. Georgia law declares all practicing unlicensed massage to be public nuisances! With the group that is currently advertising there I agree whole-heartedly with that wise assessment. Masturbation for hire under the guise of lingham massage. Practitioners with fully frontal nude photos.

I consider that Board to belong to the GA LMTs and not to those who are nothing more than public nuisances. I've got a copy of the CL agreement with the 40 signatures of state attorney generals, Georgia's included. SEE http://massagelaw.com/docs/craigslist.pdf.

I've started an email group list with 20+ GA LMTs with plans to coordinate our efforts as a group to flag offending ads... in fact flagging anyone who is not state licensed. After all the way I see it, that is our turf and all the squatters need to GET!

It will take some time... that's ok... I've been immersed in volunteerism for a number of years... helping lobby so that the state of Georgia created a Board of Massage Therapy along with the resulting licensing process.

I heard a rumor from a national massage therapy organization that 10 state attorney generals were about to sue CL for further corrections.

Anyone with constructive opinions are welcome to contact me.
