Price watch: 8GB flash drive, $9.99 shipped

This is the lowest price yet on an 8GB flash drive.

On Monday, I posted an 8GB flash drive for $16.99. Sorry to do this, but Newegg has an even better deal (with one catch): it's an 8GB Corsair Flash Voyager drive for $9.99 shipped.

What's the catch? You have to pay $24.99 up front, then wait on a $15 mail-in rebate (PDF).

If you don't mind that, this is far and away the best deal I've seen on an 8GB drive. And it has a 10-year warranty, twice that of Monday's Kingston drive.

In the looks department, I'll give the nod to the Corsair's rugged, black-and-blue shell. Alas, I don't see any way to keep the cap from disappearing, which is a constant problem for me and my flash drives.

Still, for 10 bucks, big whoop. It wasn't too long ago that a 4GB drive at this price point was reason for excitement. Who's taking bets on when we'll see a 16GB drive for under a sawbuck?

Pocket an 8GB flash drive for $16.99 shipped

Get 8GB of portable storage for just $17.

More and more these days, I find myself reaching for my flash drive. Whether it's to copy a few files from one PC to another or rescue an ailing system with emergency tools, the little guys are incredibly handy.

Of course, the higher the drive's storage capacity, the more you can do with it. Buy.com has a Kingston 8GB DataTraveler drive for $16.99 shipped. No rebates; that's your out-the-door price.

The drive includes a loop for attaching to a keychain (my preferred method of transport) and promises "secure cap storage," though in my experience, flash drive caps go missing within 6.3 seconds of unboxing.

Kingston backs the DataTraveler with a five-year warranty. I'm kind of surprised that it's not a lifetime policy, but, hey, do these things ever really go bad?

Just in case Buy.com sells out, Newegg has a similar deal: the Transcend JetFlash 8GB flash drive for $13.99 (plus $2.99 for shipping). And as it happens, this one has a lifetime warranty. Soooo...um, forget the DataTraveler and get the JetFlash instead. My bad. Yes, I'm suffering from too much vacation.

Pocket a 4GB flash drive for $5.99 shipped

4GB for $6? You read right.

Couldn't leave for the weekend without sharing this: Newegg has a Super Talent 4GB USB flash drive for $5.99 with free shipping.

What else is there to say? That's a couple bucks cheaper than I've ever seen a 4GB drive. It has a lifetime warranty; otherwise it's pretty much your basic thumb drive.

Unfortunately, it appears to lack any kind of loop or other keychain-friendly hardware, so it can't replace the drive that just broke off my key ring. Otherwise, I'd be ordering faster than you can say "cheapskate."
