Get a 10-inch Asus Eee PC Netbook for $229.99

by Rick Broida

With its attractive deep-red finish and roomy 10-inch screen, this Asus Netbook is a tough bargain to beat.

Update (10:55 a.m. PT): Sorry, folks, looks like the Netbook's already sold out. Stay tuned for a new deal later today! (In the meantime, the two backup deals below are still good.)

When it comes to super bargains, I have to confess I rarely think of Best Buy. But the store's been rocking some pretty solid deals of late.

For example, today only (and while supplies last), Best Buy has the 10-inch Asus Eee PC 1005HAB Netbook for $229.99. That's not including sales tax or shipping (the latter will run you $11.50).

This isn't your average, boring, black Netbook: the sale model has a stylish "deep red" lid and wrist rest.

Other than that, however, the specs are pretty standard: Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, 160GB hard drive, and the aforementioned 10.1-inch screen. The OS: Windows XP Home, not Windows 7.

That's the only real bummer here. On the plus side, you get 802.11n Wi-Fi and a full one-year warranty (you'd expect a Netbook at this price point to be a refurb, but this one's brand new).

The 1005HAB weighs 2.4 pounds and measures 1.4 inches thick. Asus claims a runtime of nearly 4 hours from its three-cell battery.

That sounds about right: CNET reviewed this model with a six-cell battery, and it lasted nearly 7 hours on the grueling battery-drain test. Verdict: four stars for the Asus and an Editors' Choice award.

Needless to say, if you're in the market for a Netbook, here's a top-rated model for a bottom-basement price.

Backup deal: Today only, you can get IObit Security 360 Pro absolutely free. This antimalware suite normally sells for $29.95. Interestingly, the always-free, non-Pro version earned a five-star rating from CNET.

Backup deal No. 2: Newegg has the Energizer AP1500 iPhone case/charger for just $19.99 (plus $1.99 shipping). I reviewed the AP1500 back in July, when it sold for $80. At this price it's a steal--and a perfect gift.

Score a 10-inch Asus Netbook for $239.99

This 10-inch Netbook is loaded, and it sells for a mere $239.99 (with coupon).

I'll cop to posting a lot of Netbook deals these days, but that's only because the deals just keep getting better. Witness Mwave's latest: a refurbished Asus Eee PC 1005HAB 10-inch Netbook for $239.99 shipped.

(Don't be alarmed when you see $249.99 on the product page. You need to apply coupon code FALLSVG09 to get the lower price.)

This midnight-blue Eee PC sports a 10-inch screen (which I consider the minimum for computing comfort) and the usual core-spec suspects: a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N270 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and Windows XP Home.

The Eee also features a Webcam, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and a multitouch touch pad, so it's actually a bit ahead of the curve, spec-wise. Only the three-cell battery disappoints, though Asus promises better than 4 hours of runtime.

Because this is a refurb, the warranty tops out at 90 days. (Also, take note of Mwave's return policy: the Eee can't be returned for a refund, only exchanged for a replacement if it's defective.)

Consequently, you might actually be better off with last week's $279.99 Acer Aspire One, which is new and has an 11.6-inch screen.

Still, not everybody who wants a Netbook wants a Netbook that big, and $40 saved is $40 saved. (How profound am I this morning!) I just think it's remarkable how much further your Netbook dollar goes than it did just six months ago.

Get a red Asus Eee PC Netbook for $189.99

A mere $189.99 buys you a Windows XP-powered Netbook.

(Credit: Asus)

New rules for Netbooks: Don't pay more than $300 for a model with a 10-inch screen, and don't pay more than $200 for an 8.9-incher.

Mwave has a pretty sweet deal on one of the latter: A refurbished red Asus Eee PC 900HDB for $189.99 shipped.

What are the specs? They are solid, starting with a 900MHz Intel Celeron M 353 processor (which may not be faster than the more common Atom CPU--I've read varying opinions), the Eee offers 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, Windows XP Home, and the aforementioned 8.9-inch screen.

And it's red! It's pretty rare to find a cheap Netbook that's anything but black (or occasionally white). This one's downright purty.

It's also a refurbished unit, meaning the warranty is a fairly typical 90 days. I'm going to state once again for the record that I don't consider that a negative, especially considering the $60 or so you're saving on a new unit.

I will, however, direct you to the return policy (at the bottom of the product page) for the Asus. It states that this is a nonrefundable item. You can return it within 30 days, but only for a replacement.

Hello, gorgeous! Love the Eee PC's deep red shell.

(Credit: Asus)

While this would make a fine portable PC for children and students, I think business users would find it a welcome travel companion as well. It's a svelte 2.5 pounds and its four-cell battery should be good for at least a couple hours' work.

Agree? Disagree? What's everyone thinking about Netbooks these days: Getting better all the time, or still too underpowered (or uncomfortable) to be practical? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Get a 10-inch Asus Netbook for $249.99

A 10-inch Netbook for $249.99? Act fast: they won't last the day.

(Credit: Woot)

Update: Sorry, sports fans, but it's already sold out. Check back later for another deal. Hint: free stuff!

Remember the $279.99 HP Netbook from a couple weeks ago? Here's an even better deal: Woot Sellout has the Asus Eee PC 1000H for just $249.99. Shipping will run you a very reasonable $5.

Because this is a Woot deal, it expires when the clock strikes midnight--and may well sell out before then.

As Netbooks go, this one's pretty loaded. In addition to the 10-inch screen, you get 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Windows XP.

Other perks include a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, Bluetooth, and a keyboard that's only a fraction smaller than a standard laptop's. The 1000H weighs 3 pounds and measures 1.5 inches thick.

Because it's a refurb, the warranty ends after 90 days.

That's the only area where the Asus doesn't exceed the aforementioned HP, which had a smaller hard drive and 802.11g. Of course, it's also $30 less.

Interestingly, Woot was offering the Eee PC with your choice of a six- or four-cell battery, but the former are already sold out. If you want this Netbook, act fast. Really, really fast.

Get an Asus Eee PC Netbook for $129.95

You read right: This refurbished Eee PC Netbook is just $129.95 plus shipping.

(Credit: Asus)

Holy dirt-cheap Netbooks, Batman! Geeks.com has a refurbished Asus Eee PC 900 for $129.95. (Make sure to apply coupon code 900M at checkout to get that price.) Shipping will run you about $10.

As you might expect, this is not exactly a powerhouse PC. The 900 comes with a 900MHz Celeron processor, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB solid-state drive (SSD).

Translation: forget Windows. This baby runs Linux, which is absolutely fine for stuff like e-mail, Web, and other basics--but no doubt a deal breaker for some users.

The limited storage poses some problems as well, though you can always expand it by popping in an inexpensive SD card or USB drive. This is a machine best suited to those who work primarily on the Web.

And for that it's aces. I assumed that such a heavily discounted system would have a supertiny screen, but the 900 actually has an 8.9-inch LCD. And Asus Netbooks typically have comfy keyboards, so you should have no trouble getting some work done.

Because it's a refurb, the warranty expires after 90 days. I have no problem with that; the thing barely has any moving parts anyway.

So, if you're looking for a cloud-friendly Netbook at an impulse-buy price, this is the best deal I've seen. I'd say the sellout risk is high, so grab one while you can.

Friday roundup: Dirt-cheap Netbooks, MP3s, 802.11n, Peggle

Peggle for iPhone: now just 99 cents.

I couldn't pick just one deal today, so here are five to jump-start your weekend:

Much as I'm loving the iPhone version of Peggle, I think it's a little pricey at $4.99. Good news: Right now it's on sale for just 99 cents [iTunes link]. No-brainer. Buy it. Thanks to reader Harold for the tip!

I'm not loving Amazon MP3's current selection of $5 albums, but there's one standout: Holst's The Planets, one of my all-time classical favorites. ("Mars" gets all the attention, but "Jupiter" is really the crown jewel of the collection.)

Ready for a home-network upgrade? Newegg has a D-Link DIR-615 Draft-N Wi-Fi router and DWA-642 Notebook Adapter for $39.99 shipped. Needless to say, that's cheaper than most 802.11n routers alone.

Get a new netbook for just $150 shipped!

I can't say I'd recommend a Netbook with a 7-inch screen, but check out this deal anyway: ZipZoomfly has an Asus Eee PC 701SD with Linux and an 8GB SSD for $149.99 shipped. And it's new, not a refurb!

Want to stock up on cheap entertainment for the weekend? Head to your local library. Every time I come home with an armload of free books for the kids, free audiobooks for me, and free DVDs for all, I have to pinch myself. Thank you, Andrew Carnegie!

Get an Eee PC 1000HA Netbook for $290 shipped

by Rick Broida

Save nearly $100 on the Asus Eee PC 1000HA, one of the market's top-rated Netbooks.

(Credit: Asus)

The Asus Eee PC 1000HA is widely regarded as one of the best Netbooks on the planet, if not the best. Most vendors sell it for $350 and up, but ZipZoomFly has the Eee PC 1000HA-BLK026X for $289.99.

That's after a $30 mail-in rebate (PDF) and with coupon code momday509, which you'll need to enter at checkout.

The 1000HA features a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB of RAM, a 10-inch screen, and a 160GB hard drive--fairly standard specs for a modern-day Netbook.

It also sports a six-cell battery, which Asus says will give you seven hours of runtime. (Based on some other Netbooks I've tried, I'd be happy with half that.)

Powered by Windows XP Home, the 1000HA weighs just over 3 pounds and measures about 1.5 inches at its thickest point (and 1.1 inches at its thinnest). I wouldn't call it svelte, but it's still much easier to tote than your average laptop.

CNET hasn't reviewed this model, but the consensus at Amazon (where the 1000HA sells for $385, FYI) is overwhelmingly positive: an average of 4.5 stars out of 5 from more than 370 reviewers.

Thus, if you're in the market for a Netbook, this is a hard deal to pass up. For $60 less than the price of the Acer Aspire One I detailed a while back in my Netbook Diaries story, you get a system with a comfier screen and keyboard and way better battery life. What's not to like?

A refurbished Asus Eee PC netbook for $180 shipped

by Rick Broida

This month's Wired has a great story on the history of Netbooks and the reasons they've become so popular. Price is definitely a chief one, and here's a perfect example: Buy.com has a refurbished Asus Eee PC 900 Netbook for $179.99 shipped.

As you might expect given that impulse-buy price, this model is pretty bare-bones: 512MB of RAM, a 4GB solid-state drive, and a Linux operating system.

Of course, for tasks like e-mail, Web browsing, and other online stuff, that's more than enough horsepower. If you routinely work "in the cloud," you should find this a nice little gateway.

And speaking of size, the Eee PC measures just 8.9 inches by 6.7 inches by 1.3 inches and weighs only 2.2. pounds. Definitely an easy system to travel with.

Although CNET's First Look video shows the white model, Buy.com is selling the black one. There's no mention of the warranty, but most likely it's 90 days.

So, what do you think? Is this price low enough for you to pull the trigger on a Netbook? Or are you better off spending a little extra on a more robust platform, like the Acer Aspire One for $238.99 shipped?
