Can 4 million Linkin Park fans be wrong?

I have a friend. Let's call him "Fred." Fred and I have known each other for 12 years, and I consider Fred to be one of my best friends in the world. We have a lot in common, from political views to our tastes in movies. Fred is a huge fan of Linkin Park. I am anything but. I've made fun of Fred's adoration of the band for many years, but now I'm coming to realize that Fred is not alone.

According to iLike, Fred is in no danger of being alone anytime soon. On Monday, iLike announced that Linkin Park is the first group to ever surpass the 4 million fan milestone on the music service. This means that more than 4 million Linkin Park fans have added the band to their iLike profiles.

This makes sense to me, as Linkin Park's fans seem to skew young, and you know, the kids love them some Internets. Not to take anything away from the band, though. Four million is a lot of fans.

Despite this post's opening, I don't hate Linkin Park. I actually think they have a unique sound that has recently been imitated by a number of new bands. It's just not my cup of tea. Now to see if Fred is one of the 4 million...

Eric Franklin refused to write a bio, saying, "Why are you bothering me about this bio business again? If I wanted people to know more about me, I'd send them to the Inside CNET Labs Podcast" (shameless plug). E-mail Eric.

You have your opinion and others are allowed to have theirs. Choice in music is just that.. a choice.

They have a few catchy tunes, but like you, I was never a fan of "nu-metal" with it's colliding genres. While it's unique in it's own way, just not my cup of tea. I think there are bands out there with infinitely more talent but a lot less recognition. I always be a huge Radiohead fan, and while they have many fans, there are lesser known bands like Saltillo who deserve to be heard far more than Linkin Park.

To answer your music question: yes, they can be.

But more importantly: do you really think Linkin Park have a unique sound? Nu metal is about as derivative as a sound can get, right down to the name.

If you are going to add vague praise to buffer criticism, it might help to say something accurate, or interesting. You've done neither.

As for the rest of this post, either it's pure astroturfing, or you are really desperate to find a story.

I am in the 35-45 demographic and just recently "discovered" Linkin Park. I had heard a few of their "catchy tunes" over the years but didn't know who they were other than one of my sons favorite bands. It wasn't until one of their songs I really like played on http://www.Pandora.com that I knew it was their song. That prompted me to check out a few more of their songs on-line and ultimately I bought one of their CD's (Hybrid Theory). Eventually I got a few more and they have become one of my favorite playlists. That said I think I know why some people like them and others don't. Their songs tend to deal with self loathing and imperfection and some people get depressed listening to it while others feel a sense of belonging to the club. I'm in the latter but I also like the blending of metal/RAP in their songs. With a youth culture entrenched in the "woe is me" rut there are quite a few (over 4 million) potential fans of the group.

Lets take a look back at Backstreet boys for a sec... and then define wrong.

At least these guys actually PLAY an instument.
by blkmagik98 December 9, 2008 7:11 AM PST
These guys really can't play anything- go see them live and see for yourself. Purely a studio band....

It's a proven fact that 20% of the population is stupid. It's also a proven fact that 50% of the population will like whatever is put in front of them and told that it is good. Between these two groups, yes.... 4 million people can be wrong.

Linkin Park came out when I was a senior in high school, at that time, numetal was at least better then the other popular forms of music of the era, Backstreet Boys, Britney etc. Of course, most nu-metal was awful and continues to be, but, I always liked Linkin Park a little bit.

I don't consider my music taste awful, my favorite band is still Nirvana and I listen to mostly grunge of that era, so called "alternative" and a variety of punk and old school rap of importance. But, for someone who had as much trouble with women as I had back then, and continued to have through college, something about screaming "Shut up when I'm talking to you" along to LPs song One Step Closer, or "Hear me out NOW, you're gonna listen to ME!" along to Faint, just felt really good.

So I won't say they're amongst my favorite bands of all time, or even that they are one of the "best bands" in history, but I like some of their songs a lot, they were and are cathartic to me.

Hybrid theory is still one of my favorite CD's to hit the gym with. :)

I will say I was once a LP fan when their sound was different, now after this sudden change in sound in the last album, I'm no longer a fan of their new stuff because it sounds like everyone else. And to answer a question 4 million people can EASILY be wrong. Most will just be too into themselves to say other-wise.

Also I agree with a few of the above postings saying that they can't believe this junk, crap, useless information is posted.

I like them, but i accept your opinion on them, some of their new stuff isn't that great.
by MadLyb December 9, 2008 6:52 AM PST
I am officially a geezer, but I have been into LP since they were running around as Hybrid Theory.

The new album was really weak, but I hope it was a singularity of poor judgement on their part.

As to iLike and it's ilk, I guess I am a geezer because I don't get it. There was the Me generation, and the Us generation, and now we have the "Look at me, Look at me" generation that parades around on the Internet like a bunch of prima donnas thinking the world actually cares about the details of their everyday life.

Thank you, being a 20 year old that doesn't think everyone cares about my life makes me happy someone can see it how i do... like i really want o read a blog about someone Else's life who goes to work or a party and comes home to write about their beliefs like they are an expert on it.

Guess what guys.. your not.
by er3s December 9, 2008 7:20 AM PST
All that means is that 4 millions tweens and emo's use iLike. It doesn't make them popular... They were OK back in the day, but like most bands sold out and now sound like Metro Station....

Choice in music is a personal preference. I like LP, always have... i don't care if you do, or not. Im not forcing you to listen to them. This is probably the most insignificant article that i have ever read, next your gonna post why you don't like Hawaiian pizza and your egotistical enough to believe that everyone else cares about that. Have your opinion, enjoy your music, and i will do the same. Don't push you ideas onto me.

Say what you want, but LP has some pretty cool sounding songs. You may not like them, but I always have. I usually like or at least respect any group or artist that has their OWN sound which is hard to come by sometimes. That's not the case with LP though. They have some of the better songs for you and your buddies to sing along to when absurdly intoxicated lol. They're catchy, they flow, and everybody already knows them. Including all the people that say they can't stand LP. Feed em enough beer and play a LP song and all of a sudden the lyrics start flowing out of em. How is that possible huh?

All that matters for me music wise is that they're putting their own originality out there. Of course it's not totally original, but I cannot stand copycat bands. I'd rather listen to a crappy band that has their own sound over a copycat band that's really really good at sounding exactly like someone else. There's so much crap out there that sounds exactly the same, usually no matter how crappy it is if it sounds unique I'll grab it up and just be thankful for something new.

We're talking about clicking a little button that says "iLike." Its not like these fans have to go through some rigorous aptitude test to show what a fan they are.

I have an account on iLike. There are plenty of bands that I've clicked the button, even though I'm not a die hard fan. Linkin Park hit this mark because their demo is kids and young adults, and iLike is generally populated by that group. I'm sure, in the long run, a band like the Beatles and/or Rolling Stones will pass them. Other than that, what does it matter?

LP held a contest to up their iLike #s not that long ago... can't remember the prize, though I think autographed merch or concert tickets were a part of it. It was promoted all over the place, so some of the numbers can be attributed to that.

Also people in general just LIKE them. lol

Linkin Park are amazing.
To that comment below, I've seen them live too, your point? They are amazing live, infact, one of my favourite bands to see live.
I'm not a huge lover of their new music. They have got older and their music has changed, it's still good, Chester is still an amazing singer, Mike too. THEY havent changed, just their music, they're still good though.
