Perhaps you're like me and starting to wonder if the RIM BlackBerry Bold is just a mythical creature like Bigfoot--spotted in the wild a number of times but yet to be captured, or in the Bold's case, released. The smartphone was announced way back in May for AT&T, but we have yet to hear about an actual availability date. Oh, and trust us, we've asked RIM numerous times for just a teeny tiny hint and have been met by the same answers: "this fall" or "very soon."

We do think the launch is close, but if you're looking for something a little more concrete, here's something to nibble on in the meantime. On Monday, the Boy Genius Report posted screen shots of what looks to be Best Buy's computer system, showing an in-stock date of October 26 for the Bold. BGR goes on to say that the smartphone will have a price of "around $600" (come again?) and will be released a week or two ahead of AT&T.

Again, this is all speculation so take it for what it's worth. Personally, I'm tired of waiting and have already moved on and set my sights on the RIM BlackBerry Storm. Anyone else?

I too am a bit surprised. I wonder why such a delay with the Bold. Is it something with AT&T? The storm was announced later, and Verizon is already all over it (I got my Verizon mailing last week with the teaser).

I agree with Bonnie Cha. Many people have moved on and are looking at other options. I think that AT&T made a huge mistake with all of the delays and very poor communications to many of their customers (and not to mention potential customers) who were looking to purchase the Bold. What were they thinking? The Bold has already been released in 31 countries around the world. What could have been a very ground breaking success for AT&T and RIM could potentially be their biggest failure. When the Bold is finally released, it better deliver near flawless performance and exceed expectations. That?s the least AT&T can provide for folks who have waited with long anticipation for the release of the Bold.

Every time I went to an ATT store I got the deer in the headlights look when I asked about this phone. I never understood that.

I think it may be a problem with the 3g network in the US. Maybe all the iphone people are stretching it too the max. Who knows though?

I wish the storm was on ATT though, that looks freakin sweet.

The reason for the delay of the Bold from everything I have read is AT&T's 3G network. Right now, the iPhone is clogging the network. For every iPhone, there are 20 Blackberry's in use. So AT&T is naturally worried. This phone was suppose to be released early Sept., but b/c of this network issue, they are a bit panicked and trying to resolve the issue. I'm coming from a Razr V3, knowing I need more features like the ability to check email, etc. I can't wait for this phone to be released. I've taken the tutorial and I'm drooling. It's just disappointing the 30 countries already have this phone and we are all still waiting.

My current employer uses BB on AT&T. My potential next employer uses BB on Verizon. I'm looking forward to the Storm, but I'm not thrilled about the SureType in portrait mode. I can type reasonably well on my current 8320 either 1 or 2 handed. I used SureType on the Pearl previously and never liked it, so I'll have to waste an entire .5 second flipping the phone for landscape use every time I type. I'll lose the option of quick 1-handed email replies, because I simply won't wrestle with SureType. Some people don't mind SureType and a few even like it, so preference will vary from user to user.

I'm betting that the delay is due to AT&T approving the software. The 8320 is still stuck on OS4.2 (I'm running 4.5 and it is far superior in usability), although there have been rumors for the last 8 months of AT&T releasing higher revs. The 4.5 rev was released by major carriers in the UK, Europe, Canada, and Asia over the last 2 or 3 months, but AT&T still has yet to approve & release.

I got my wife & kids 1st gen iPhones and the QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode works well enough, even without practice. Overall, though, having a larger screen makes reading and digesting info much faster and I read much more than I type. If the Storm could keep nearly the same form factor and add a slide out QWERTY keyboard and virtual QWERTY in portrait (closed) mode, it would be perfect for me. I'd prefer to get an HTC Touch Pro or Xperia X1 and swap SIM cards, but I'm not sure how well that would work on a BES system.

The fact that the screen on the Bold is slightly SMALLER than the screen on my 8320 makes it much less interesting. It probably played well in focus groups with limited hands-on time, but in daily use, the existing screen is barely acceptable for reading and composing emails. For web use other than checking weather and sports scores, it's nearly useless as well. Given the larger screen and much faster processor of the Storm, that's where I hope to be soon.

The lack of WiFi isn't a major issue for me. My 8320 on EDGE is nearly as fast for my use, so the Storm on 3G should be schwanky. The family iPhones are much faster in web-browsing, due to their far superior render times. My 8320 is downright pedestrian and reminds me of 1997 dial-up browsing. For anyone downloading a lot of music, videos, or large file attachments, I'm sure WiFi would be a big benefit. My major concern will be Verizon capping the download max, when I don't have an option to take my larger downloads off of The Network to save them bandwidth.

Did you really just say "so I'll have to waste an entire .5 second flipping the phone for landscape use every time I type..." ?????

You can't say "NOW!!" in .5 seconds... what the hell??

Let me, a best buy mobile sales consultant, clarify those images on the BGR page. Firstly the price of the phone(600) you see is only before(or without) any kind of contractual agreement or renewal. That price can also change. Secondly, an in, or out-of-stock date does not dictate when the product will be sold or pulled off of the shelf by Best Buy. If you look to the left of In stock date, where there is a field for "Street Date", that is when the store can actually start to sell the product. In stock date is just an estimate to when the stores should see their first shipments.

You're insane.

First, a Best Buy mobile sales consultant isn't going to have information that a VZW salesperson doesn't.

Second, RIM nor BB are stupid enough to put a touch screen phone meant to compete with the iPhone on the market for $600 when you can buy the iPhone for $199.

Beyond that... it really doesn't matter...

Yes, I am thinking the Bold was just a publicity stunt. I've been waiting since July as my Blackberry 7130 slowly stops working. No news from any reliable sources, and no sign of any coming. It is now anti-climactic, and I'm moving on to the G1 from T-Mobile, which at least has a solid release date. Too bad RIM couldn't get their act together to get this out before the Iphone 3G, which I would buy except I can't deal with that virtual keyboard. Movin' on.

the hold up is the 3G network. it sucks... ATT claims 3G is so amazing but it just isnt up to PAR. that is why RIM didnt want to release their phones with it. but ATT told them they need to add 3G and they did but guess what... what sucked then still sucks now and the 3G is a showstopper.

i've been using my new bold in hong kong since end of july and i love it. however, there's still some bugs and need to restart with the battery taken out every few weeks. just today, it suddenly stop vibrating, after playing around with it for a while, i took the battery out and everything was back to normal.
btw, my 3g iphone is locked up and no longer in use.

Suprisingly, the Blackberry BOLD is available in Canada on the Rogers Network. Most times, Canada lags in new releases, but it looks like this time we're ahead. I have the BOLD, it's much better, but a bit bigger than the Curve. The screen is resolution is awesome, the look is very much like the iphone. There's suppose to be a new Blackberry Touch Screen coming out in the next few months.

I was looking at the new blackberry bold 9000 coming out in the second week of November and the price I was given was $299 by AT&T (with a 2yr contract). I think I'm going with the iPhone instead.
