Audio cables: Better than a woman?

by Steve Guttenberg

LittleFlashlight's hilarious YouTube video portrays audiophilia at its most extreme, er, light. The title, "Why Valhalla power cable is better than a woman" merely hints at the possibilities. LittleFlashlight has a bunch of videos up there, but "Woman" is the best of the ones I've seen.

The Audiophile Club of Athens on YouTube!

by Steve Guttenberg
  • Post a comment

Some guys are into cars, some gamble, or blow the budget on high-end kitchens. Me, I'm an audiophile. I've met a lot of really intense tech geeks over the years, but this masterful YouTube video by Ken Barnes takes it to the extreme. The members of The Audiophile Club of Athens show off their stuff. It's a truly gorgeous video, lavishly produced and the short interviews are well done.

One guy admits, "I was a normal human being until I was thirty five years old." and then he found hi-fi, and he's been obsessed ever since. It's all about a love affair with exotic gear, sound, and yes, music.

Do you have the audiophile 'disease'?

by Steve Guttenberg

My wife happened to find the article, "Audiophilia," online with no author listed. The article reported that a new neurosis was discovered, audiophilia, an excessive passion for hi-fi sound and equipment. The Audiophiliac was amused.

I admit it, we audiophiles are an obsessive bunch who endlessly fuss over our hi-fis, but no more than car freaks fiddle with their fuel injectors, or computer geeks agonize over bits and apps. Each group has its nut jobs, but they're at least passionate about what they do.

15 sites that went kaput in 2009

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.

Top 10 news stories of the decade

Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.

About The Audiophiliac

Ex movie theater projectionist Steve Guttenberg has more or less successfully hitched his future to home theater, but he still pines for the clickity-clack of 35 MM projectors and all the stale popcorn he could eat. Between projectionist gigs he worked as a high-end audio salesman for sixteen years, and produced records for an audiophile label. Oh, and one more thing, nothing annoys Steve more than being confused with the other Steve Guttenberg, the washed-up Police Academy actor. The wordsmith Guttenberg is a frequent contributor to a number of magazines and websites including Home Entertainment, Playback, and Ultimate AV. He is a member of the CNET Blog Network and is not an employee of CNET. Disclosure.
