On Tuesday, AT&T announced the newest addition to its smartphone family, the Samsung Epix, and if you think it's simply a minor upgrade to the Samsung BlackJack II, think again.

True, on the surface, the Epix looks pretty much like the BlackJack II, save for a couple of different buttons, but Samsung stepped it up and equipped the smartphone with a touch screen and optical mouse. That's right. You can now interact with your device through the 2.5-inch screen (with your finger or built-in stylus) and navigate with the traditional controls or with the optical mouse. The latter is located in the center between the Start and OK button, and lets you move a mouse-like cursor on screen with a simple finger sweeps over the area.

We've seen this feature on the Samsung Omnia, and I'm interested to see how people will take to it. I didn't find it particularly useful on the Omnia, and often just it switched back to the directional keypad. You can also do this with the Epix. Other design highlights include a full QWERTY keyboard, a silver finish, and slim design (4.6 inches high by 2.4 inches wide by 0.5 inch deep and 4.4 ounces).

Featurewise, the Samsung Epix runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition and offers numerous e-mail solutions, including Microsoft Direct Push, AT&T Xpress Mail, and Good Mobile Messaging. Wireless options are fully represented on the Epix: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, HSDPA/UMTS, and quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world roaming. The Epix is equipped with a 2-megapixel camera and supports AT&T's Video Share service for video calls.

The Samsung Epix is available now at select AT&T stores and online for $199.99 with a two-year contract. We should be getting our review unit in the next couple of days, so check back soon for a full review.

when I logged onto the ATT site, it was listed as $99 with applicable data packages.

I found the same $99 upgrade price yesterday, but when I went to buy one at the AT&T store, it was $199. I went back home and checked, and yup, they've taken away the MIR--it's now $199. Bummer!

I just ordered my Epix today from AT&T. I waited to upgrade my BlackJackII for this phone to come out. At&T was pushing me toward an iphone, but the iphone couldn't handle my business needs, and I didn't like the idea of Apple controlling which applications I decide to put on my phone. I am sorry that At&T and Samsung decided to kill off the BlackJack name. With the new touch screen, optical mouse, I will have to upgrade my Skyfire browser and other applications to work with the new phone.

WHAT??? Windows Mobile has tons of apps for various uses and yes people DO put apps on WM phones, ALL THE TIME!! I have 10 apps on my Blackjack II!

Everyone that I know who has a smartphone puts tons of apps on them. I had as many as my phone could handle. The reason apple had to an app store on their phone in the first place is because people wouldn't abondon their real smartphones for a dumb one. Granted the app store for apple is awesome and I love my iPhone, but to say that WinMo doesn't use apps is just uniformed.

You're kidding, right? I have tons of apps on my WM phone which perform indispensable tasks for me. The only possible explanations for your off-the-wall remark is you don't understand the WM marketplace, or you're an iPhone fanatic (guessing the latter).

The iPhone is great for some people, but I don't like the fact that there is no memory expansion slot. The Epix handles a 32GB microSDHC card, the max size allowed. That gives me a lot of expansion room for data, music, video, pix, and if I put in an Ultra II card, plenty of speed for apps as well.

Wow! Though 2 weeks later, when I read that I just had to respond. Of course people download apps to their smartphones. From video players to atomic clocks, and communication programs such as Skype. So, as you so eloquently stated in your response...get over it, and get into it.

What ever happened to AT&T releasing the Samsung Omnia? I hope they weren't talking about the epic. Does anyone know?
