Apple's Black Friday deals

by Julie Rivera
(Credit: Apple)

Update: The promotion is now live on the U.S. Apple Store site.

Apple will be holding a one-day shopping event on Black Friday, according to a teaser up on Apple's Web site. Every sale on the Apple Store is an event, as it happens very rarely, and discounts on Apple products are meager throughout the year. That is, if this is an event full of discounts and sales. The interesting part is in the wording:

"Come back to the Apple Online Store this Friday for a special one-day-only Christmas shopping event. You'll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone and Mac gift ideas - all with free delivery."

However, anyone who is familiar with how Apple works, one would surmise that Apple is referring to iPhone accessories as the "gift ideas" and not the device itself.

Furthermore, and not to play devil's advocate here, but this teaser is for an Apple Online Store sale. Not to mention that this promotion is only up on the New Zealand Apple Store currently, as MacRumors notes -- but it will undoubtedly be up for other parts of the world as well soon.

Although, Apple isn't specific as to what products they will offer at this "special one-day event" on Friday, the symbol on the teaser page pretty much contains all Apple products. Most likely, one of the products that Apple will offer hot deals on would be the iMac as it wasn't updated this fall and new iMacs should be coming early 2009.

In the meantime, Best Buy currently offers $50-$150 discounts on Apple Computers.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned, but MacMall has Apple savings up to 44% off on the current line of Apple products. It sounds like a much, much better deal than Apple. Check it out: http://www.macmall.com/macmall/pre-holiday-sale/default.asp?id=1&adcampaign=external,mwb15579&wt.mc_id=mwb15579&source=mwb15579

The heavily discounted ones are previous generations. The current line have about 10% to 15% discount.

The deals at Best Buy on the previous generation of Macbooks are sick. I picked up one of the black ones for $1100, and it has better CPU specs than the bottom of the line new one that costs more.

I did too but I deleted it without reading it. Apple keeps sending me junk. I hope the deals are good though. I would really like a new Macbook. Apple products are outrageously overpriced in Canada so I'd better be able to snag one for $999. Wishful thinking though.

Meh, better deals through Dell and HP. Oh and better products.

wow, anilsudh is retarded, just because somebody perfers dell and hp doesn't mean that they support vista. I love dell and hp, and ubuntu is godly.

Vista is a good OS, people need to stop repeating the propaganda of Justin Long.

Better deals?

Oh, you mean the generic stone-age PC systems running Vista?

I wouldn't consider THAT a deal.

What I would consider a deal is a computer that works, you know, a Mac.

When I bought my 2nd Mac (Black Macbook) last summer, I did consider a PC notebook, but when (as a consumer) I compared value -versus- price, the value of a quality built computer with the world's most advanced operating system bundled together made my decision an easy one.

Mac is the best, believe it.

From my findings, it seems as if MacMall may have some better pricing than Apple for Black Friday this year.

Not sure about this. The ad says, "You?ll find dozens of great iPod, iPhone, and Mac gift ideas." with free shipping on orders of $50.00 or more. Don't get me wrong, I recently made the move to Apple and think their products are great, however, Apple seldomly offers discounts. I think the real gimic is the free shipping. There's no doubt you'll find gift ideas, but there's no mention of any savings other than free shipping.

Very true.

I noticed last year during the entire holiday shopping season, not a single Apple product went on sale.

Interestingly, every Apple store in Manhattan (there are three) was packed with crowds.

Why?

Why buy anything during the holidays that's not on sale at a discount price?

I feel like a fool for switching to the Mac, knowing very well I will never save a dime as long as I am a Mac person.
by pajja November 25, 2008 7:15 PM PST
Free shipping has always been offered on orders over 50 bucks. In past years, I know things like .Mac (now Mobile Me) have been discounted 30 bucks without the need to purchase a computer.

Having switched to the Mac a year and a half ago (I have two Macs), after seeing the ad in my mailbox, I highly doubt that Apple will offer any product at a discount price.

This is sad because the #1 reason people prefer a Windows PC -versus- an Apple Mac is PRICE.

Now that Apple stock value is on a decline, I am hoping they sense a trend here.

I am willing to predict that the moment Microsoft gets their act together and builds a stable operating system, half of all Mac users will switch back.

Apple has become Microsoft: A big evil company that only sees dollar signs.

Apple has traditionally had sales on Black Friday, with fair discounts on their computers. Other sources are saying that this year's discounts will be $100 - $150.

People say the difference between a PC and an Apple is price. I would agree. It's the price difference between a Chevy Impala and a Corvette. Both will get you to point A to B but you'll have a lot more fun with the Corvette! But you'll never see the Corvette being discounted.

Everyone I speak to who has switched to the Mac all agree that while the Mac is better, the PC is more affordable.

As for which system is more fun?

Honestly, most consumers feel it's more fun to save money.

Imagine if you can save money on something that you need.

Do you ever purchase an automobile without negotiating the price?

Do you enjoy paying sticker price?

As a consumer, this is a big deal, especially in this economy.

Most people who switched to the Apple brand did so because Apple does make a better computer than the PC.

If I were you, I wouldn't generalize or stereotype all Apple customers.

Most of us are not "fanboys"; rather, we are "consumers".

As a consumer, I appreciate no Windows viruses and related issues and I don't miss the daily updates to patch the operating system.

Don't know if this was on purpose... the link given to the teaser message directs you to the New Zealand Apple Store, not the US one.

Apple?s is just better? That?s assuming their overbearing control doesn?t bother you, or the limited software. Apple is doing better when it comes to consumer software, but they are still limited when you compare them to what?s out there for a pc.

Both Microsoft and Apple have there high points. Yes apple computers are very nice and you don't hear about alot of problems with them, however they have failed to do one simple thing that Microsoft has done. Microsoft has made developers happy by basically allowing any developer to develop for it. Apple has not since they are so closed off from everyone. Apple's products are also just not practical for everyone, especially the average American. Windows reach is much farther than Macs will ever be if Apple keeps this up. Apple is good at innovation in the technologies they develop for there computers however, there practices really kill innovation since they really only allow the developers they want to publish software for the mac. I have both a Mac and A PC and in there own respect am happy with both. Vista would be just as good if not better than a Mac if they were like apple and only really developed for a hand full of computers, but that view is unrealistic to think that that way of thinking will stay. Vista was a good operating system, Microsoft just rushed. Apple needs to lower there prices I would definatly agree on that one. they just took there store down to update it, lets hope we see some good sales!

Talk about "much ado about nothing". No MacBook Pro on sale; $21.00 off a $400 iPod touch...whoo--hoo!

Apple sucks. Anyone who buys anything from them is a sheep who enjoys walking through life with a "kick me" sign on their backs.

Apple really sucks.

Leo as in Laporte??? If so, that guy was hyping this "sale" on radio last week even though it is common knowledge that the usual discount every year is barely even worth mentioning. Talk about losing what little credibility you might have had at being objective. Only true sale was HP/Live.com, even though there were connection issues there. Of course on Cnet they do not care, as the primary goal here is to put Apple it the best light possible.

Frys one day sale my ignorant friend. Yes...$299
by AppleSuxLeo November 29, 2008 5:53 AM PST
Leo LaPorte is an Apple kiss-ass...I hate Apple and their closed system , but I smile with gee when I get a well-appointed notebook for $299 because it isn`t Apple.

Wow.. these deals were terrible. Student and Federal Employee discounts are MUCH CHEAPER then this. This is just like Sony who decided they were not going to lower the PS3 for the holiday. How about some real deals.
