Apple prepping two wireless devices with Verizon?

(Credit: Gizmodo)Over the last few months rumors have continued to swirl around a possible Verizon-Apple deal to bring the iPhone to Verizon once Apple's exclusive pact with AT&T expires in 2010. But Tuesday BusinessWeek added a new twist to the rumor, reporting that Verizon and Apple are in talks to develop two new wireless devices that may hit the market this year.
Allegedly, one device would be a thinner, lighter, and lower-priced version of the iPhone--an iPhone Lite, if you will. While the other device would be something akin to the jumbo iPod Touch that we wrote about previously. BusinessWeek's anonymous source describes it as a "media pad that would let users listen to music, view photos, and watch high-definition videos."
The source, who claims to have seen the new media pad, says it's "smaller than an Amazon Kindle electronic reader, but its touch-screen is bigger than the Kindle's." It would be able to place calls over Wi-Fi and a high-speed wireless data connection from Verizon.
In discussing the latest rumor, BusinessWeek and some analysts seemed to downplay the possibility of the iPhone Lite coming to Verizon as long as Apple has an iPhone deal in place with AT&T. While details of that agreement remain scant, the assumption is there's a clause that very likely imposes "strict limits on Apple's ability to introduce an iPhone on a rival network," according to BusinessWeek. There's also a strong possibility that Apple is using all the Verizon talk to put pressure on AT&T to extend its deal with Apple at better terms.
All that said, with all the chatter, it seems more likely we'll see that media pad--or what some people are calling Apple's version of a Netbook--this year. And the wireless portion of it might very well be powered by Verizon--or AT&T.

Verizon used to allow you to buy a smartphone without a dataplan but I guess they got tired of dealing with irate customers that "accidently" rung up a huge bill because they accessed the data network without a dataplan.
That's like paying for a cable tv programming package, when all you really want to use your tv for is movies and local news.
Where I live, Alltel pretty much dominates in service, customer satisfaction and so on. I know a lot of people who flipped their lids when Verizon bought them. My g/f was on SunComm... and now that they are T Mobile, she has had nothing but problems out of her phone. But my best friend out of state praises T Mobile and her G1 like it's the Jesus phone on Heaven Wireless ;)
It sucks, but that is how EVERY carrier does it. I'd personally like to see a "data-ready" plan that maybe costs $5 a month and per MB used for people like me who will only go on the web when connected to a wifi hotspot.
So how did the suggestion that MS start making phones equal being a troll??? "how can they (MS) catch up in the phone arena if they never started"??? Well, did that stop MS from rolling out Zunes to compete w/ iPods? Did that stop MS from rolling out the Xbox to compete w/ the PS2???
Since it's not a smartphone it's fairly obvious why you never had to cut-n-paste.
Lol
WOW! You don't know what a troll is!? You fail trying to be smart with your comment.
Micirosoft makes great hardware like keyboards, mice, flight sticks, steering wheels and so on. I've not had any problems out of my X Box or X Box 360, so they get a thumbs up from me on that front... even though I am fully aware of the RRoD... I've never personally encountered it or know anyone who has.
Oh how I long for the days of device freedom from the tyrant telecoms...but, it's nice to see these two companies at least exploring options again. Verizon can't say no to Apple again can they? And afford to lose all that revenue? How quickly will AT&T die out once Verizon gets the iPhone? Granted, the iPhone was always really meant for Verizon, but if Verizon does get the iPhone, this could spell the end to telecom competition in the US as Sprint is about to die out and AT&T minus the iPhone = baby shaker app (not a good idea on all fronts). That scares me cause prices will do nothing but skyrocket...
The highly anticipated phone -- along with webOS, its brand-new operating system -- has already begun to give other companies fits. Apple (AAPL Quote) was the first to react when the Pre was introduced. And now, Apple's iPhone partner AT&T(T Quote) is reportedly sending internal memos that boast to their people why iPhone is a better deal.
On the other hand, designers who have been working on software for the new Pre have nothing but praise for the upcoming device.
Yep people...the Pre is gonna be a failure ! That is why ATT/Apple have started the FUD-Machine already.
Go Apple!

$10 says they make a move to block Skype.
Google-phone is at 1 million in over a year. OUCH ! Glad I waited as well as the fact I get $150 towards a new Sprint phone (Pre) as I have fulfilled my contract.
There will be more form-factors and carriers sooner than you realize. USA , Europe , World.

- I don't understand how AT&T "sucks" for NY State. Where exactly in NY State? You should be more specific. I'm in LI and work in the city and it's great. Also, have friends with iphones in Westchester, CT, and all over with iPhones and no one has any problems. I used to have Verizon on a Treo and the network was good but everything else was bad: data speed, customer service, billing BS, attitude of employees at Verizon stores. Plain BAD. I'll take AT&T and Apple technical support any day....

- Lets put it this way. Every single person I know and every single client I have uses Verizon. Why would I want to use AT and T or Sprint and use up my minutes for every call. Western NY by the way. Not NY city.
