Almost $13,000 in Apple gear awaits the person lucky enough to download the 1 billionth App Store app.

Apple is approaching the 1 billion mark for applications downloaded from the App Store, and plans to give out a host of Apple gear to the lucky billionth customer.

The company put up a countdown Web page Friday as it gets closer to the mark: as of this writing, about 928 million applications have been downloaded from the App Store since it went live last July, according to the counter. Whoever manages to download the 1 billionth application will come away with a pretty good haul: a MacBook Pro, a 32GB iPod Touch, a Time Capsule, and a $10,000 iTunes gift certificate.

Somewhere north of 30,000 applications have made their way onto the App Store to fuel those 1 billion downloads. Along with the promotion, Apple released some stats on the top downloads in both the paid and free categories: Facebook has been downloaded the most times among the free applications, while Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D has received the most downloads among paid applications.

the prize doesn't go to the billionth customer. the text says: "Download an app and you?ll automatically get the chance to win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card, an iPod touch, a Time Capsule, and a MacBook Pro. Just go to the iTunes Store, browse the App Store, and download your best app yet."

Looking at the official rules, the contest ENDS when the 1 billionth app is purchased. Again, official terms: "The Promotion shall run from 12:01 a.m. EDT on April 10, 2009 and ends with the downloading of the 1 billionth app (?Promotion Period?)."

So, anyone who buys an app between 4/10/09 and the moment of the billionth purchase is eligible for the prize. Also, there is a max entry of 25 per itunes account.

Max entry of 25 per day, I believe it says.
by Tom Krazit April 10, 2009 11:02 AM PDT
Yep, you're right. Will fix.
by Tom Krazit April 10, 2009 11:09 AM PDT
Well, now I'm not so sure, as the rules also say this:

"The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app."

I'll see if Apple will clarify.

While Microsoft continues to make ads with actors pretending to like Windows, Apple continues its world dominance in the hand held arena which will lead to eventual desktop domination in 5-10 years.

Cool, so in 5-10 years. "Think Different" will mean buying a PC.
by Mr. Dee April 10, 2009 12:20 PM PDT
Geez, so you are saying over 1 billion iPhones and iPod Touches will be sold in the next 5 to 10 years? What will PC users everywhere will ever do? :-O

Well, it's always hard to accept when what used to be the "conservative" becomes the "counter culture." Just ask Republicans.

1 billion?
So we have a few million idiots with a toy downloading 100s or 1000s of free useless apps.

My favorite is the bill splitter at a restaurant: Lets see Bill divided by 5.
Some might call this brand new app a calculator but to mactards, its "innovative" a an application worth a spot on an Apple commercial. **** this is a prime example of the typical "innovative" app for the iphone!

Why would you waste your time writing an opinion like this online.

I wonder what people like you act like outside of the internet. It's funny but I'm not laughing with you.
by The_happy_switcher April 10, 2009 10:49 AM PDT
If you can do better, WIntard, then by all means go for it. Otherwise, ****. People are not forced to download/pay for anything--it's called a free market. Some people enjoy pointless apps much in the same way they enjoy pointless tv shows, too. There are 1000s of useful apps and you've decided to cherry pick some of the lamer ones. So what?

JabberWolf: What a wonderful name and your comment leads us back to your name JABBER. Pointless time to write a pointless comment. I bet you just love your WINMO phone and the amount of times you have to reboot per day. Long live the WINMO!

it's called convenience something you Windrones don't understand apparently
How could you abusing yourself with that buggy O.S everyday
has probably made you forget about simple things like that

It's also Funny how your beloved Meetoosoft will be following suit
with their own app store soon
and guess wat you'll have the exact same apps on you're
unusable WinMo phone as well probably in about a year !
enjoy your harassment -:)

Jabberwolf shut up, it's just a handy little app, not a revolutionary app.
by SNOOP_ROCA April 12, 2009 11:24 AM PDT
oh yea nd may I add that if this was for a Microsoft phone you'd b in love with it. (nd some apple fanboy would b bashing it LOL)

Just got SnapTell and Bump. It would be sweet to win but with my luck I just hope I don't get more dead pixels on my screen.

As has been stated... this article is incorrect. The prize does not go to the person who downloads the 1 billionth app. Starting NOW, anyone who downloads an app is entered. There is also a form on their site you can enter without even downloading anything.

look at the rules closer. It says "The prize will be awarded for the entry (either through an app download or through the non-purchase online entry) sent immediately following the download of the 999,999,999th app."

Even if you download now, you still have a CHANCE. The rules also said that if the regular winner somehow forfeits the prize, the next winner will be RANDOMLY selected. So if you don't want to try to waste your time watching the counter and getting it just right, you better hope the winner does something wrong.

@benjony
Why would you waste your time responding to that opinion? If you do not like it don?t response to it. Personally I thought it was funny.

I thought it was funny too.

But do you really want to tell me what to do online? Where is this leading to?

Before more people start arguing about this, if you actually read the rules (there's a whole huge page of them), it says that yes, whoever downloads the BILLIONTH app gets the prize (or whoever submits the last non-purchase form before it ends or whatever). It ALSO says that if that person happens to forfeit the prize in any way, another winner will be RANDOMLY selected among all who have submitted a form/downloaded an app.

When it says "Download any app and you automatically get the chance to win..." well, technically, you still have a (REALLY small) chance even if you download apps/submit forms NOW, BEFORE the BILLIONTH app, because the last person could forfeit or something.

Also, on a different note, in the Rules page, it says the retail value is some random number ABOVE $13,000 not "almost $13,000" as the caption of this article's image says. I haven't checked prices myself, but I'm just pointing it out.

i know free is free and you should be grateful but why would someone need $10K in itunes credit, why not give out an imac and mac pro instead

because it doesn't really cost apple anything, and you are unlikely to use $10k worth. i still don't own 1000 albums after 30+ years of collecting them in all formats.

Less than two years ago there was no iPhone, do downloaded "apps" -- Now a billion downloaded! thank you Apple, thank you Steve Jobs.

This should be a lesson to every business that innovation steals the market. If you don't reinvent youself continuously, understand clearly that you are only in business now because no other company in your market space is reaching into the future. And that two months after someone get guts, you will be wondering what happened to your bottom line -- six months later you're toast.

And don't get me started about goverment and innovation -- A look at NASA's Shuttle with tiles you literally glue on and a computer that was obsolete 30 years ago gives a glimpse what will happen if we let any government official have anything to do with the way private industry is run..

Wait... I'm confused. It says "sweepstakes" on the heading of the prize. Is it a sweepstakes or is it a 1,000,000,000th app downloaded thing?
