Another rumored 'iPhone Nano' photo

With Macworld coming up in just two weeks, the parade of Apple-flavored rumors, wishes, and murmurings continues.

Guess which one is the rumored iPhone Nano?

(Credit: MacRumors.com)

The latest to surface--or resurface--involves a purported concept photo of what's said to be an "iPhone Nano," a more or less three-quarter-size version of the Apple iPhone. Even as it presents the photo, MacRumors.com also invokes a healthy dose of skepticism:

We have some serious doubts about the likelihood of such a device. These doubts are based both in the quality of the sources as well as the practicality of introducing a new form factor to the iPhone/iPod Touch platform.

Those cautionary words echo the historical perspective offered by CNET News' Tom Krazit, writing a week ago on the occasion of some earlier Nano-esque reports:

iPhone Nano rumors date back to the launch of the original iPhone, when a financial analyst predicted that Apple would have a slimmed-down version of the iPhone out for the 2007 holiday season. That obviously didn't happen, and other reports this summer and more recent speculation about a $99 4GB iPhone to be sold at Wal-Mart have kept the rumor alive.

And Monday, Tom took stock of a potential clue in this story: "iPhone Nano cases appear online."

If Apple does release an iPhone Nano all the apps on the app store won't work. They will be too large. Of course they could add something in xcode to build two versions of an app a full size one and a scaled down nano version. However all the ui elements such as buttons would then be smaller and more difficult to touch. I can't see a way around this.

That leaves one conclusion; apps will not be available for the nano and it would be like a smaller version of the original iphone. It could also maybe be pay as you go.

I don't see apple coming out with this product though. The current price is already very cheap and makes the phone very accessible.

That leaves one conclusion. You shouldn't comment on CNET posts. The phones are resolution based. If an iPhone nano comes out and the screen, while smaller, is the same resolution then the Apps will not know the difference in phones.
by MosX December 23, 2008 8:57 AM PST
Why can't the UI just be scaled? Applications for other touch phones are smaller than the ones on the iPhone and they don't have any significant problems.

Forget the iPhone nano or any other hardware. What everyone is missing out here is Apple first needs to get it's OS right for the iPhone. Apple being a master of innovation I don't understand who was that ******* developer who created the OS for the iPhone without the Copy/Paste feature something so basic even available on MS DOS.
But as always, Apple NEVER gets anything right the first or even the second time. To prove my point... first the lame iPod, then the little improved iPod Photo and finally the iPod Video (with minor improvements in the sebsequent generations). Same goes for the Nano. First generation was alright, 2nd... *** like a square with such a small screen and the 3rd generation... finally the right size, good enough for the Nano. As for the iPhone, first generation - LAME - The world is moving towards 4G and Apple couldn't come up with even 3G. then came the iPhone 3G. And now it's about time for Apple to get the iPhone right.

blah..blah..blah...whine..whine..whine..
Looking at just these statistics alone goes (outside of all the other rave reviews) just goes to show that you're in a very small (but vocal) minority. Rarely does any company get anything right the first time. However, Apple did get pretty darn close with the v1 iPhone considering their sales just for their first-year 2007 release.

The iPhone is constantly evolving. Hopefully, heavily requested features will be added. But even without them, it is still a pretty impressive phone.

Think you can do better? Put aside your juvenile, childish whining and build your own. Apple can't get it right the first time? Let's see what you will do.

There is always the Android phone if Apple upsets you that much. Oh wait, Android has its own issues too! Well what a surprise. I guess you're the only one outside of Apple and Google that seems to know how to get it right the first time eh? Does Steve Jobs and Sergei know you exist?

Whiner....

sflocal,

Step outside North America and you will understand what the cell phone industry looks like where Apple is nothing. Ever looked at a Nokia phone which is not even available in the US (the latest models) because of how outdated the US cell phone industry is and how you have to live up to what your provider gives you as compared to the rest of the world where you as a consumer choose what you want. There are alot of phones which can do what Apple thinks it is "inventing something new".

Having said that, as an Apple & Google shareholder, I am extremely happy people are wasting money and buying the iPhone or the G1 which helps me by keeping the share price high. As a consumer I would never waste money on the iPhone when I can get Blackberry for FREE. iPhone is only design for consumers with its fancy interface and cool apps which in business world means nothing, something Steve Jobs never realized. The reality is even if you have a billion consumers it's nothing compared to only a few corporate clients which RIM gets it. Corporations will always spend more than consumers. Scream as much as you want about how cool Apple is, at the end of the day it's RIM and Microsoft making all the MONEY which is the bottom line for the shareholders who don't really care how the App Store is doing unless it's making money for them.
BTW I am actually glad that no company gets it right the first time because that's what allows the companies to get repeated consumers who waste money and get the first product (full of bugs) and come back again to spend money AGAIN when the product is all tested and works right. I am all for it - bringing the corp profits up which gets me better dividends as a shareholder :)

Welcome to the Capitalistic World where Corporations set the rules.

As for your comments on if Steve and Sergei know that I exists, I don't care if I am a nobody as long as I get my dividend and the share price stays high. Does that answer your question?

Even if they kept the resolution the same, the images may still become too small. Beyond a certain DPI the dots become so small that some things that were reasonable size on the standard iphone would become too small on a smaller screen. This is the big problem with the small screens on most phones. Sure, you can make smaller pixels, but at some point you face the limitations of the human eye where most people will at best have to strain to see something and at worst won't be able to see the details at all.

@ abcd9009
I have stepped out of North America quite often. I lived in Europe for five years and spent much time in Asia. So I know what goes on out there outside of the bubble called the "USA". I've also used RIM's and did "waste my money" on an iPhone. I know how people use their phones overseas (since I've used them too) and do see the differences in how other countries use mobile technology.

I also own AAPL (but not Google). I'm happy that people enjoy Apple's products. I'm happy that people buy G1 and RIM phones. I personally believe Apple makes great products that benefit consumers.

Consumers trump corporations when it comes to phones. Think about it. If a person at work uses RIM, he/she may very well have a personal phone too. Not always the case of course. But if that company downsizes and eliminates that employee, RIM will lose that one phone revenue but that person will still have a personal phone of some sort which may not be RIM.

Apple has been hugely successful with the iPhone. Especially since it was their first attempt into the smartphone market which at the time was considered overly-saturated. They redefined the rules. Any company would kill to be in Apple's position - RIM, Nokia included. Your very critical - borderline ranting - remarks about "a company" screwing everything up does not hold water considering the sales figures from pretty much everyone show that they are apparently doing something right.

Now it's possible you see something more that you strongly believe in that you feel they should be doing. I take the position that this company developed a new product that took what was a "dead market" by surprise and made a killing off of it in under a year. For some reason, that doesn't seem enough for you.

As an Apple investor, I think Apple is doing a fantastic job with the iPhone. It's not perfect. Nothing ever is but in general, you and a great number of people seem to not have the patience with companies and their products but are more concerned with making a quick buck and running off. Not what I consider to be investing per-se. Perhaps you should stick with playing craps in Vegas.

I've developed two successful iPhone apps in the education category. I would be concerned that it would be more difficult to see all the beautiful artwork that I put in the apps if the screen was smaller. The art in the preschool pals henry & hailey app has great details such as freckles on the faces, eyelashes, bolts on the robot, nails on the dog's paw. If the screen was smaller some of these amazing details might get lost. I think some consumers would actually prefer a slightly larger iPhone. Especially since there are now more expensive games like SimCity which also has a ton of detailed artwork.
by IgnatiusTheKing December 23, 2008 8:50 AM PST
I'm not buying it. It's not Apple's style to just make something smaller and call it "nano." They actually create a whole new look for a product AND make it small.

I would've thought that whoever provided the "concept" photo, at least should've resized the photo of an iPod Touch and not an iPhone. That's the picture of an iPhone. Apple is still making a lot of money from the new nanos an wouldn't make that mistake of replacing it so quickly, even if they had such a device ready, especially so late into the Christmas shopping season.

A cheaper, smaller, crippled (no app store, etc.) iPhone for basic calling and music might be a good entry level device to get people with the Apple program. I'm sure the iPod and iPhone can be credited for pulling through other Apple product sales (Mac, iTunes, etc.).

As a second iPhone, it might be good for the gym, beach or clubbing (less risk if it is lost or stolen) and it would probably increase MobileMe subscriptions, since people would want to keep the contacts, etc. in sync across the devices.

I'm not an iPhone guy, but I can see the value for something like this.

Hm... Apple hadn't yet squeezed everything it could from actual iPhone - it make no sense introducing new form factor.

And about form factor. The image IMHO is fake. If Apple going to introduce new form factor, they gonna make use of the new form factor. And the form factor in the image changes everything to worst: even with original iPhone form factor, people complain that it is too small.

Interesting... Both the iPhone and the iPhone Nano show menu names in French.
Horloge = Clock; Bourse = Stocks; Plans = Maps; Appareil Photo = Camera, etc. etc.

this is sooooo ridiculous.... would you expect apple to not have itunes or app store on the home screen in any product demos? it's pretty apparent that this is a photoshop job and the first 3 rows of icons were simply copied and pasted....

i understand why you'd post this, i mean, you got me here, but come on! cheap way to gain a few hits...

I agree that they aren't going to do that to the app developers just yet. (thank you)

Another thing to notice here is that the OS in those photos is pre-2.1 (look at the 3G logo). If apple were making promotional materials for this in the last several months, why would they use an older version of the OS to do so? The commercials are always VERY up to date.

I think this is a fake drafted up over the summer.

I think it's a cool idea. All those who are "poo-pooing" the idea are clearly upset that they are stuck with the clunky, 1st gen versions (and fearful that their current "must have" gadget will be yesterday's news). I think the smaller phone will be a hit and hope they come out with it!

Guess what, the so called 'Nano' phone says 'iPhone' on the back, not 'iPhone Nano' as I would come to expect...
Chock this image to photoshop.

thats not correct, the ipod nano doesnt say ipod nano on the back, it says ipod, so by this logic, iphone nano would say iphone on the back

Actually if you go to the picture link and look at the full size pic its hard to tell what the capacity label on the back of the iphone says could be 4gb could be 8gb, what do you think?

Here's how I KNOW it's a fake, just look at the camera on the picture on the far left. The lens in the suppos-ed nano is smaller...my iPhones camera already sucks, don't think they'd put a smaller lens on it to suckify it more.

Quit posting these stupid RUMORS and wait til they actually make an announcement!

There's no way Apple is dumb enough to make a nano phone that is just a smaller version of the Iphone. If it were smaller, the functionality would have to change as well as the whole outlook.

Apple's best step would to take the "nano" technology and make the Iphone thinner, like Ipod touch thin. The only way to have a reasonable Nano type phone is if the screen were to remain the same size but the surrounding bezel shrunk. (mostly from top and bottom)

The "artist" obviously copied the iPhone photos from Apple's website. They are the exact same photos from the iPhone gallery online now. I wish I would've thought of it!!
