Yahoo launches local-search engine

Yahoo announced Monday that it's launched Yahoo Local, part of a move to give Web surfers more exact and more comprehensive local-search results. Previously, the service had been available only in beta form.

Yahoo Local is located at local.yahoo.com, but surfers can also get there from Yahoo's front page or use the service on the company's main search page. Yahoo Local is expected to go head-to-head with a localized search service that Google enhanced several weeks ago. Both companies have their eye on the estimated $100 billion U.S. local advertising market.
