XML security device unveiled

Web-services security company Digital Evolution released on Monday an appliance designed to authenticate access into business networks.

The company has developed what it calls a virtual private network product specifically designed for applications that use XML and XML-based protocols to format and exchange data. With the device and associated tools, network administrators can set security policies allowing a business partner to establish a connection into a corporate network. Once the access is authenticated, the device allows the two parties to exchange data between applications securely over the Internet, according to Digital Evolution. Company founder and chair Eric Pelier said Digital Evolution is the first company to create what it calls an "XML VPN" and said that other companies will follow. He said most security products are designed to keep out intruders, while Digital Evolution's appliance lets companies set policies on which business applications can be accessed by outside parties.

XML VPNs are nothing new
An XML VPN is nothing new, it's just another name for an XML security gateway.
