WinBook makes Pentium 4 mobile

WinBook has launched a new notebook that lets customers take Intel's top-of-the-line 2.2GHz Pentium 4 processor on the road. Though the 2.2GHz chip is meant for desktop PCs, WinBook will use it in the J4 notebook to offer a portable package for those seeking high-performance computing, the company said.

The move is part of a growing trend among PC makers, who have turned to desktop chips with the aim of selling faster, lower-priced notebooks. The J4 will cost $3,095 when fitted with the 2.2GHz chip, a 15.1-inch display, 512MB of RAM and a combination CD-RW (CD-rewritable)/DVD drive. It is also available with Intel's 2GHz and 1.6GHz Pentium 4 chips, the company said. The company said it took measures to make sure the notebook stays cool because high-end chips tend to produce more heat since they use more power than other semiconductors.
