Following are some of the notable technology-related events scheduled for the week of Sept. 26.
Tech events appear to be in a whirlwind of activity. Conference goers trying to get to shows in Florida will be keeping an eye on Hurricane Jeanne. Cisco Systems and IBM have events scheduled in Orlando and are watching closely.
In New York, Red Hat, a reseller of the Linux operating system, is meeting with financial and industry analysts this week.
And in Silicon Valley, Bill Gates plans to make Bay Area visits on Friday, culminating with a stop at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. He is scheduled to speak with John Hennessy, president of Stanford University, on the theme "Building Confidence in a Connected Marketplace." Gates plans to talk about how technology will contribute to commerce and society in the future. There will be a question-and-answer session afterward.
On the D.C. beat, Sept. 30 marks the deadline to submit comments to the Internal Revenue Service on its "advanced notice of rulemaking proceeding" that regards expanding the current 3 percent excise tax on telephone service to new "communications services" to "reflect changes in technology." Providers of VoIP, or voice over Internet Protocol, services have been concerned over the possibility of taxes as a result.
Sept. 30 is also the deadline to submit written comments, or requests to participate, to the Federal Trade Commission for the FTC and the National Institute of Standards and Technology's event, titled "Email Authentication Summit." The FTC's interest in this issue is dealing with spam and fraudulent e-mail.
Cisco's big gathering on Internet Protocol communications products will take place at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, providing that Mickey and the whole gang don't get washed away by a hurricane. The Web site for the conference has a weather contingency plan saying conference administrators will monitor conditions and will notify of changes.
IBM planners are also keeping tabs on the weather for its IMS Technical Conference at the Florida resort.
On the earnings calendar, Research In Motion and Micron Technology are scheduled to report.

- Professionals interested in radio frequency identification technology are expected to attend the EPC Global in Baltimore, Sept. 28-30.

- Micron Technology is a maker of flash memory. It's expected to report fourth-quarter earnings of 21 cents per share.
- Research In Motion is the maker of the BlackBerry handheld device. It's expected to report second-quarter earnings of 43 cents per share.
- Initial Claims is the weekly total of new claims filed for unemployment compensation. Briefing.com expects 340,000 for the week ended Sept. 25, from 350,000 the previous week.
