The big three....

Yahoo!, Google, Microsoft. These three players will see the biggest change during this time. Whether that change is positive or negative, no one knows.

Expect Google to try to angle itself into more markets to catch all that new cash- a bigger push into print ads, more plays in mobile, and a big effort to try to monetize YouTube. Then, you can expect them to wear themselves out too thin. Google has never tasted the bitterness of defeat. Microsoft will be their chief rival, and will try to usurp them at every misstep. Google will have to prove that they can translate their popularity into increased profits.

Microsoft will try to buy their way into the ad market, when they aren't shoving it down end users' throats. When oversight ends in 2008, Microsoft may have a self-imposed grace period of trying to show they've changed. But when Google announces they are racking up more share, winning the war on Windows Mobile, and Google Docs becomes a downloadable product with more features for free, Microsoft will have no choice but to revert back to it's old ways. Expect the next version of Windows, or even SP2 for Vista, to gently "nudge" users towards Microsofts' competing services. Is the possibilty of an ad supported Windows out there? Sure, Ballmer may be thinking about it. I doubt Vista will be that platform. Windows 7 anyon? Once Microsoft gets a foothold- Google search blackouts on IE, oops! It was a technical glitch! Microsoft has done this in the past against web rivals, they would certainly do it again. Is it too late? Is Microsofts' ad/search effort going to save the company, or are they doomed to becoming yesterdays' news when Google OS eventually releases with critical acclaim and support? Who knows. But the WinTel days are fading (look no further than Intel- the newest member of Google's Android platform).

Yahoo!, the wallflower at the dance. Sure, she may not be the most attractive, but it's what is inside that counts! Or, maybe not. They have revamped their search, have been launching a renewed attack on the ad market and even brought back their founder as CEO. Is this going to make much of a difference? Most unlikely. Google is too far entrenched in the desktop; mobile is the only market where there is no clear leader. If Yahoo! can outsmart Google and win mobile, then maybe they may have a chance re-replicate that success back towards the desktop. If they fail? Expect a big merger between Yahoo! and- Microsoft? Murdoch sure could use a shiny new portal! Barry Diller just broke up IAC, but could always use more brand power. Mobile is going to be Yahoo!'s last straw. And if that breaks, we will be down to two web overlords.

With ad spending doubling by 2011, these three players are going to be under even MORE pressure to grow- and you thought the competition was already fierce! Don't forget about the wannabe web-leaders: IAC, NewsCorp, Facebook, NBC|Universal, AOL/TW, and the all secretive Apple. (Out of curiosity- I wonder what would happen if Schmidt were able to get the full support of Apple behind it? Free ad-supported iPhones? Perhaps Mac OS could become available for all IBM compatible PCs! iTunes Zero!, the possibilities and partnerships would be endless. Oh the possibilities!)

One of the free ways to advertise is to post classifieds.

For instance, http://www.adgobble.com is adsolutely free, it's new, and has nice design.

I still think that classified ads is one of the best ways to reach people.
