Why oh why didn't these companies examine Divx 6. It would give them hi-def quality on red ray disks.

Resolution != quality

There are no "red ray" bitstreams that are going to compete in the realm that that are working in.

1920x1080 might be technically "hi-def", but that doesn't mean it's "hi-quality".

MPEG-4/H.264 is better...

And Blu-Ray is better than HD DVD. But when has MS ever gone
with a good idea when they could 'innovate' a potentially
proprietary one? Actually, MS probably had no choice since they
could never have any significant contribution to the Blu-Ray/
H.264 program which many other content providers are
promoting.

So it's WB/MS vs Sony and everyone else.This could be most
interesting to watch for developmentsm and for multi-format
blue laser DVD products.

I have not seen anything which actually supports MS's claims for
WIndows Media 9. Very few of the video files I've encountered
use it. VLC, QuickTime, and MPlayer seem to be relatively
common and dominant. RM is mostly to be ignored. So if WM9 is
worth keeping, I guess I'd expect a lot more people would be
using it......, and they aren't.
