VMware tests Opteron support

VMware, an EMC subsidiary whose software enables a computer to run several operating systems simultaneously, has released "experimental" support for the 64-bit extensions in Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron processor, the company announced Monday. The support arrived with version 4.5.2 of VMware's Workstation software and 3.1 of its GSX Server software.

AMD's extensions, which debuted in 2003 with Opteron and are due to be mirrored June 28 by Intel with a comparable 64-bit technology in the Xeon processor, are designed to make it easier for a processor to accommodate large amounts of memory gracefully. That can be important in memory-intensive situations such as running multiple operating systems.
