United Online makes dial-up Linux-friendly

United Online on Thursday announced that its dial-up Internet services will now be compatible with Linux.

The company said it supports Linux-based LindowsOS for its NetZero and Juno brands of dial-up services. With this, NetZero Platinum and Juno Platinum services of United Online are available for PC, Mac and Linux operating systems.

However, the company, based in Westlake Village, Calif., said its other service plans, such as NetZero HiSpeed and Juno SpeedBand, are not currently available for LindowsOS.

The Lindows ISP software comes preloaded on LindowsOS version 4.5, which is available at retail stores. It can also be downloaded from NetZero and Juno Web sites.

Internet service providers MSN, America Online and EarthLink do not support LindowsOS on their dial-up Internet services.

"By offering LindowsOS-based dial-up Internet access, the NetZero and Juno brands now appeal to a new audience of computer users who are looking for a value-priced option to access the Internet," Brian Woods, chief marketing officer of United Online, said in a statement.
