Unisys deepens Cornell relationship

Cornell University, an institution that has shown an interest in using Windows servers for technical computing, has bought another high-end Unisys server, the Blue Bell, Pa.-based computer maker said. The ES7000 system, with 16 Intel Xeon processors and eight Itanium 2 processors, will support statistical research at the Cornell Institute for Social and Economic Research, Unisys said Tuesday. Although Unisys competitors IBM, Dell and Hewlett-Packard also have Itanium and Xeon servers, none of their servers can house both processor types simultaneously.

The Cornell Theory Center previously bought ES7000s and numerous lower-end Dell Windows systems that are linked together to form a high-performance computing cluster.
