U.S. Defense Department awards contract

The U.S. Defense Department has awarded a $108 million contract to the San Diego Supercomputing Center, Mississippi State University and the Ohio Supercomputer Center to improve high-performance computing technology. The consortium, called the Programming Environment and Training (PET) group, was awarded the three-year contract to investigate simulations of fluid flow, climate, weather and the ocean.

Nine other universities also are involved in the consortium. There are five one-year extension options for the contract.
