Network security specialist Trend Micro has revamped its anti-spyware lineup, launching on Monday a new version of its computer defense applications and a new package of tools to fight malicious software.
In coordination with the launch, Trend Micro released new research showing that spyware continues to plague corporate computer networks. Ninety-three percent of the 500 IT professionals who Trend Micro recently surveyed have experienced an increase in the volume of spyware found on their companies' networks during the past three months.
The survey, conducted for Trend Micro by TechRepublic, which is owned by News.com parent CNET Networks, also found that 87 percent of companies it queried believe that spyware will become an even bigger headache before it can be contained.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company introduced an updated version of its OfficeScan anti-spyware software, which is designed to protect desktop computers, laptops and network servers against the harmful applications. OfficeScan version 7.0 includes revamped blocking technology to fend off spyware, adware, remote-access attacks and password-cracking applications. The software can also now be integrated with security tools from networking giant Cisco Systems.
"We want to give people the same sort of protection that they're used to for viruses, with anti-spyware--a multilayered defense at the network level," said Jack Marsal, senior product marketing manager at Trend Micro. "Blocking spyware at the gateway, and again at the desktop, gives people far greater ability to defend their systems on every level."
Individual versions of the software will sell for $35 per seat for desktop and notebook computers and $26.40 per seat for servers. Trend Micro is also selling a version that promises improved network security management for $40 per seat. In addition, the company has rolled all the products into a single package, dubbed OfficeScan Anti-Spyware, which will sell for $50.80 per seat.
For North America, Trend Micro also introduced a set of integrated security tools, known as the InterScan Anti-Spyware Suite, which bundles antivirus, antiphishing, URL-filtering and anti-spyware technology. That package will retail for $27.80 per user, the company said.
I have tested Trend Micro Anti-spyware for both Desktop and SMB There is a great deal of good things about this software and there are those that detract from this offering.
The software performs well especially their Spy-sleuth and Venus Spy Trap which will give you early warning and precise information to changes to your registry or BHO.
The downside of this software its never ending quest to update itself. Without either software or hardware constraint the application will check with its parent for updates every 5 minutes 24/7 and it will go through every Port of you PC to try to contact home.
It remains unclear if the application is trying to update itself or spy on your usage. The following is an example of a constrained Trend Micro AntiSpyware Application being denied access in the form of my Firewall Log.
It is not possible to turn off this feature, by any means. I have challenged Trends Micro on the subject, however they remain silent.
If you want to increase you network traffic substantially dont bother to constrain the application and take the risk of what data this application IS really sending.

Google creates an animated doodle that features a boy, a girl, Google's search engine, and a jump rope. But might there be darker, more analytical, more troubling interpretations to this tale?
The Silicon Valley online payments startup grew by 1,000 percent last year and is hopeful it can repeat that level of growth this year. To do that, it's had to move away from its early friends-and-family roots and embrace small businesses.
Chamtech's spray-on antenna uses a nano material to provide a low-power boost to antenna range. The wireless-in-a-can product may some day bring an end to unsightly cell towers.
EnerG2 opens a plant to make an engineered carbon that will improve performance of energy storage devices and make storage for start-stop hybrid cars less expensive.
