Big names team in online sporting goods venture

Who wants to be affiliated with a dot-com? Regis Philbin does.

ByeByeNow.com will announce Monday that the host of ABC's "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" will become a virtual host on the travel site. Philbin will welcome guests and give virtual tours via streaming video clips interspersed throughout the company's Web pages.

Philbin is just the latest celebrity to link up with an online company. William Shatner and Avery Brooks of "Star Trek" are spokesmen for Priceline.com and IBM, respectively. Sports greats John Elway, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky serve on the board of online sporting goods retailer MVP.com.

Launched last year, Pompano Beach, Fla.-based ByeByeNow connects customers with offline travel agents. Customers can either call a toll-free number or talk to agents on the Internet via an online chat.

ByeByeNow focuses on packages such as cruises, ski trips and golf vacations. These types of packages are typically more profitable than sales of airline tickets or hotel rooms, which make up the bulk of sales for online travel leaders Expedia and Travelocity.
