Disney on Tuesday announced portable digital-video disc and compact-disc players targeted at young consumers.
The personal DVD player, measuring 3.5 inches, will be available in different character-themed designs such as Mickey, Disney Princess and Power Rangers, Disney Consumer Products said. The gizmo can play DVDs, CDs and MP3s, as well as display digital photos. A larger 7-inch version of the handheld with an open-and-close clamshell lid is meant for family use, the company said.
The company, known the world over for its cartoon characters, has entered the consumer electronics market with its Mickey Mouse-branded products including a Mickey PC, ring tones for cell phones, video games and downloadable movies.
Disney is also selling special headphones for the devices for $14.99, including one shaped like a tiara.
The players will begin shipping this month at $129.99 for the 3.5-inch model and $199.99 for the 7-inch model. Initially, the player will include a DVD featuring favorite Disney shows "Phil of the Future," "Brandy & Mr. Whiskers" and "Proud Family," the company said.
