The importance of extreme secrecy

In response to the Perspectives column written by Charles Cooper, "Sour Apple":

I am a firm believer in free speech. However, it is critical to maintain extreme secrecy with respect to intellectual property in an era where technology products have an 18-month lifespan.

Reporters have to learn that passing secret or sensitive material around is just as flagrant as distributing stolen merchandise. The press needs to acquire its material through legitimate means and should not be helping criminals destroy the competitive edge that companies work hard to develop. How many readers would want their code or copyright materials broadcast in a similar manner?

When I was in the defense industry, we operated on a "need to know basis." Reporters would do well to operate by the same principles.
