How many evil things is this "do no evil" company going to do? From helping Red China oppress its people by censoring the Internet to taking the side of evil in the Taiwan situation, Google is really starting to look like an enemy to freedom and democracy. Yikes.

...check out Declan McCulloughs' commentary this week about the possible balkanization of the internet. Taiwan can make its own upper level domain and shut out Google if it wishes to, and is one of the countries with enough technical expertise to do this easily.

Google is just following the US government policy
by croc_hunter October 4, 2005 9:57 AM PDT
First, Tawan government call itself "Republic Of China". And second, the US government and the Unite Nation all agree that there is only one China, and that's the "People's Republic Of China" (mainland China). Therefore, why do you guys scold Google, not the US, the UN or the Tawan government.

Learn some Chinese history, dude. It sounds like you know little about Chinese history, but try to look like an expert. Sigh...

Those people who lives in Taiwan before Chang actually also came from the mainland. They migrate to Taiwan not in batch but sporadically during the recent hundreds of years. And Taiwan is a formal province of China at least since Ming dynasty.

It's called Identity
by October 6, 2005 4:04 AM PDT
Firstly, I identify myself with Taiwan, not China. Just as Americans don't identify themselves as English. Or 4th graders aren't 3rd graders.

Maybe I have some Han blood in me, but its never about the blood, its the culture, its pride, and freedom.

Secondly, to your previous post, ROC was a name given by the Nationalist fresh off the boat. The current governmnet is trying to amend that and change the official name to Taiwan, its pretty much a bi-partisan issue. The US and UN im sure, gets alot of bashing already, but Google is trying to sell this "do no evil" while politicking? I don't think so.

Google just gives the facts. If Taiwan's on the UN books as a province of China, thats how Google reports it. That's what makes them the best.

If after hearing about this in the news, you wanted to find out some comprehensive, non-biased information about the China-Taiwan dispute, you'd still Google it, wouldn't ya!

Because...

... we have to give the PRC time to self destruct. The PRC wants to
move into the 21st century, but to do that, the PRC has to open up
to maximum freedom for the people. The PRC's existence depends
on extremely limited freedom for the people, so modernization
leads to self-destruction. It happened in Iran, it happened in
Russia, and it will happen in the PRC. It might even happen in the
DPRK, if the people live that long.

Google as well as any other business should not be entangled to take sides on undefined civil political disputes. Political party members should keep their own political ambitions out of international business. Google has correctly listed Taiwan as a province of China because Google is a U.S. Corporation, and the status of Taiwan to the U.S. government as defined by Shanghai Communique and the Taiwan Relationship Act, which both were agreed and passed by the U.S. Congress is that Taiwan is a part of China. Albeit, whether Taiwan belongs to the Republic of China or the People's Republic of China was intentionally left unclear. Contrary to TSU's own reality, this is the real reality in the U.S. for Taiwan.

David Huang of TSU said "Taiwan has never been ruled by China, nor has the Chinese government deployed any government functionaries or armed forces here," is incorrect. I believe Mr. Huang needs to study his world history, and look into Ming and Qing dynasty, as well as the Treaty of Versailles signed at the end of World War II. Perhaps, to learn all this history, he can do a quick history search on google.com.

I don't think Taiwan is a province of china, nor does the majority of Taiwanese people. Did George Washington think he is an English?

It is far more complicated for outsiders like you to comprehend, taking into considerations Taiwans history and its current national and international political situation. The Chinese government is pretty evil, Tibet comes to mind, and rest assured they'll murder Taiwan if Taiwan and Independence are in the same sentence together, oh! and where is America all the while? Profiting by arm sales to Taiwan by maintaining the status quo. Google in bed with China is evil in my book.

Google must correct this malicious misinformation in order not to mislead the world.
We must never allow a rouge, tyrannical and oppressive regime [unelected by its citizens] to make such unjustified claim.
We must defend Taiwan from any false publicity that the Communist Chinese regime is propagating.

You've got the story as screwed up as the PRC. Formosa was
originally settled by Malays, not Chinese. About 1600 passing
Portugese sailors called it 'Illa Formosa" or 'Beautiful Island", but
did not bother to colonize it. About 1640. the Dutch East India
Compnay found only the aboriginal population (no Chinese) on
the Island. The Dutch set up a port, whose name became the
source for 'Taiwan"

A Ming Dynasty pirate expelled the Dutch, but the Ming
influence was overrun by the Manchu Dynasty, which had an
aversion to water, and made no move to capitalize on the island
as a part of China.

In 1887, in an attempt to outmaneuver the Japanese, the
Manchu finally tried to recognize Taiwan as a province. The
Taiwanese never had a say in this, so the claim is somewhat
bogus. In any event, the claim lasted only 8 years until the
Taiwanese tried to make their island independent. Almost
immediately, the Japanese occupied Taiwan and took control of
the island. Japanese control lasted until 1945.

Then Chang moved in as temporary control on behalf of the
Allied Forces. The Taiwanese were glad to get rid of the Japanses,
but Chang's operation was 'corrupt, repressive, and uncivilized'.
Life went down hill from there for both Chang and the
Taiwanese.

Now the PRC wants to claim Taiwan/Formosa as THEIR province,
like there was any rationale other than national ego to support
the claim. Two billion mindless marching Chinese are hard to
ignore, but one would hope that some day, logic and intelligence
will overcome PRC rhetoric.
Sure Taiwan was, is, and will be only a province of China

The pro-independence politicians has repeatedly risked Taiwan to destruction in order to gain political power. Cut out the spin and the political rhetoric and determine for yourself whether the political posturing really serves any purpose other than political expediency?

As for the history of Taiwan as an independent state, until about twenty years ago, the Taiwanese government referred to itself as the Province of Taiwan. Taiwan, which so desperately wants in at the UN now, walked out on the UN as a protest when Red China was admitted. The crux of it all, the Taiwanese government felt it lost face when the US recognized that the government on the small province of Taiwan has no hopes of reunifying and can no longer represent China.

Many people in Taiwan who champion an independent Taiwan still refers to those who took refuge on Taiwan after the Nationalist lost the Chinese civil war as "Outside Province" people vs. Taiwan provincial natives. Interesting choice of lingo for a group of people who also claim that they are not Chinese.

I don't really care what the polically expedient terms are, but the fact remains that population on Taiwan are mostly of Chinese decent, speak Chinese - regardless Mandarin, Hakka, or ******** (Taiwanese). It really sounds absurd when the pro-indepence people push the regional ******** dialect as Taiwanese. Taiwan has little to no history. Most "Taiwnese" emigrated to the island in the last two hundred years. During all but the last two decades, it was administered and ruled by either a Chinese government or by Japan.

Only during the last dozen years or so has there been a strong Taiwanese independence movement. Many of the early political leaders in the pro-independence party had close ties to Japanese collaborators and sympathizers during World War 2. They were the group who lost the most when the Nationalist retreated to Taiwan. It's a fight about money and control, not about principals of democracy.

In the end, Taiwan is a self governed territory, with official recognition only from countries it can bribe. To the rest of the world, it is an anomoly. This is a testament to the weakness of the UN system. The UN can recognize and support the independent states of Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia from the breakup of Yugoslavia, which started with a fraction of the population of Taiwan. But Taiwan cannot get official international recognition because few country want to risk the money making opportunities in China.

The sad part is that the people of Taiwan will continue to suffer from this ambigous status. Politics will continue to rule the day.

After the dictators in China (who wouldn't know Communist ethics if it slapped them in the face) suck the lifeblood out of Hong Knong, and any other piece of capitalism they get thier hands on, will need Taiwan's economy to keep the farce going a few years longer.

If you thought the breakup of the old Soviet Union was interesting, wait until China spins out of control.

the biggest headline July 2, 1997 was the fall of the Thai Baht.

Mainland China needs a prosperous Hong Kong to gain credibility and grow. It was primarily the ineptness of the last governor, ah Chief Exectuive of HK, Tung Chee Hwa that sucked the life from HK.

One can not have a credible comment about a situation without living there. Be involved and just not observe where facts are usually not even correct (Western Media Bias).

by October 6, 2005 11:09 AM PDT
I think Taiwan has every right to be a separate and disticnt
country, but they should stop calling themselves the Republic of
China. They lost the war for China. They can't have it both ways.
If they want to be called China then they are a province of China.
If they want to be called Taiwan, then drop China from their
name.

Same thing with those silly Anaheim Angels. They play in
Anaheim California not Los Angeles so they shouldn't call
themselves the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Stupid.

Chinese President is shameless murderer
SARS broke out in December of 2002 in China, but Chinese President (Hu Jintao ) concealed the epidemic situation. Have caused thousands of people's death. Did not announce the epidemic situation until April of 2003. I thought out the method to use protective clothing at this moment. They do not allow me to announce to the outside on breaking my network after knowing. Then take forcible possession of the contribution . These people are a group of shameless murderers! Now, I tell you , if China unifies with the " setting up new national flag , national anthem , national emblem , name of the country , capital , constitution " method , this method was figured out by me! Price that this method is sold is 500 billion dollars. If they have not had the concurrence of me , but unify with this kind of method . So whole Chinese nationality is a group of shameless parasites! This method is suitable for Korea , S. Korea too. It is 50 billion dollars to sell their price! If S. Korea prior to U.S.A. withdraw from the army from Iraq , there can be little price!

Taiwan needs to decide
by DrakeLoneStar October 6, 2005 11:18 AM PDT
whether they are an independant country or not.

If they won't come out and say 'We are independant' then nothing will change.

The 'Americans' declared their independance and we went to war.

Taiwan isn't going to become independant without a war or some struggle.

So don't criticize others who say that Taiwan is part of China, because Taiwan isn't saying it is independant...

If the separatists want the world to recognize that Taiwan is an independent country and that it is not a part of China, then they should have the balls to declare just that.

I welcome the declaration. It will save a lot of wasted time to settle the matter once and for all.

Has anyone ever wondered why President Chen, who is in his 2nd term of presidency hasn't done so already? Until he does, he should be considered a coward and a hypocrite by the 51% of people who voted him into office.

I think TSU and DPP sympathizers and supporters should all write to their party officials to declare Taiwanese independence on October 10, 2005. It will be a good symbolic day to announce the long awaited grand statement to the world. We can dub it the debutante ball for Taiwan.

NO! I take it you haven't any clue of the economic implications of the situation. Taiwan, as a distinct entity, is very wealthy. That isn't the least of the economic issues at hand, not mentioning the political problems faced here. The government now occupying Taiwan lost the civil war and indeed is in no place, least of all militarily, to assert its independance form the world's second most powerful military and economic power.
sorry who is rude?
by October 6, 2005 11:10 PM PDT
Can I say you are rude because you never care what I think. No I cannot because I believe what I think does not matter you, so why would you borther caring what I think. Therefore you cannot say general chinese people are rude just because they do not care what Taiwanese people really think. Please dont generalize the target you want to blame, be more specific.
