Symantec takes over IDS maker

Symantec has bought Platform Logic in a deal that will add the start-up's AppFire intrusion detection software to the security company's own product line. The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, closed Thursday, said Symantec spokeswoman Linda Smith Munyan.

AppFire Suite is Glennwood, Md.-based Platform Logic's flagship product, designed to keep out viruses and worms by monitoring program behavior on servers and workstations and identifying potential threats. The technology will be integrated with Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec's existing software, which includes its own host intrusion detection system, Smith Munyan said.
