Sybase debuts Web tools

Sybase (SYBS) is continuing its comeback in the database and development tool market.

The company today debuted key middleware and development tool packages for building intranet and Internet applications.

Sybase today announced PowerDynamo, a Web application server for deploying thin-client applications. With a possible slump in new sales of database server software, analysts have identified application server middleware as a key growth area for database software companies.

PowerDynamo 2.0 works with the company's new PowerSite development tools for building and deploying thin-client intranet, extranet, and Internet applications, Sybase said. The server works with Web servers to process templates of embedded business logic and database connectivity, and dish out ultra-thin HTML-based pages to client systems.

PowerDynamo 2.0 is priced from $1,995 per server.

PowerSite Enterprise 1.0 allows for the development of HTML, Dynamic HTML, JavaBeans, and ActiveX-based thin client systems, according to the company. The client code can then be deployed through application servers such as PowerDynamo. The tool will debut later this month, priced at $2,995 per developer.

Sybase also shored up its data warehousing tools and announced PowerDesigner 6.1, an updated version of its modeling tool. The tool is priced by module. Sybase also said it is now shipping Adaptive Server IQ 11.5, a decision support database, priced from $25,000.
