Surf Watch Ratings System

  • Post a comment
A California-based organization for parents with cyber-savvy progeny is proposing a ratings system to make the Net safer without legislating content.

SafeSurf is showing the ratings system at http://safesurf.com/wave/. The plan is called the SafeSurf Rating System and is predicated on identifying positive sites for kids--instead of blacklisting inappropriate Net locations. Those sites deemed appropriate for children will be able to identify themselves with a child-safe code. Other sites that don't carry the code will be blocked out automatically under the plan.

Whether the plan succeeds or not will depend on voluntary acceptance by Net providers, said organization representatives.

The SafeSurf Internet Rating System is now under review by members of Congress, Net access providers, and software developers.
