Sun is rising on Windows NT

September 19, 1996
Following yesterday's announcement of new clustering hardware, Sun Microsystems (SUNW) introduced today software designed to deliver on promises of high availability for database and file system management.

Solstice HA 1.2 is the foundation software for the Ultra Enterprise Cluster solutions, Sun says. Features of the software include fully automated fault detection and recovery and integration of volume management and file system management through a GUI dashboard.

A built-in toolkit and application programming interface (API) enables generic applications to be failed-over to another node in the event of a hardware, operating system, or data service failure. Sun says scalability has also been enhanced, with support for systems raging from single processor Ultra Enterprise servers through multiple processor Enterprise 6000 systems.

Support for relational database and Network File System (NFS) products includes Informix, Oracle, and Sybase, with support for Sybase's SQLServer and Informix Online DBMS added to the current release. Support for NFS is included, while modules for other programs are purchased separately.

Solstice HA 1.2 is included with the Ultra Enterprise Cluster HA server and available to Solaris OEM's on the Sparc platform. The software requires Solaris 2.5.1 and Solstice Disksuite 4.0.

Sun says the base price is $5000 per node for an Ultra 2 cluster. After Sun makes the software available to other OEM's for use on their platforms, official pricing and availability will be announced.
