Sun preps Jini management software
This software allows big corporations or phone companies to keep track of all their Jini-enabled machines, including wireless phones, smart pagers, VCRs, and printers, the company said.
The prototype is based on Sun's Solstice Enterprise Manager, a set of network management applications used to manage large layouts. The company's management software thrust has lately focused on the telecommunications market, a potentially lucrative niche for the firm.
The prototype will include the Java Dynamic Management Kit (JDMK), which will provide a bridge between more traditional management devices and Jini devices, Sun said. The JDMK is a toolkit that allows developers to create the Java "agents" that allow devices to be managed.
Sun engineers took about three weeks re-architecting Solstice Enterprise Manager technology to create the network management software for Jini devices, the company said.
Sun is currently working on the prototype's road map. The product has not yet been named and no release date has been set. Sun said it is still not known whether the product will be sold as an add-on to Solstice Enterprise Manager or as part of the base product.
