Sun lures Siebel to x86 Solaris

Sun Microsystems has signed up software company Siebel Systems to support its attempt to make useful a version of its Solaris operating system for x86 chips, the companies plan to announce Tuesday. Solaris, a version of Unix, runs most widely on Sun's UltraSparc processors, but the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company is trying to take advantage of the growing use of x86 servers based on Intel's Xeon and Advanced Micro Devices' Opteron.

Hewlett-Packard and IBM rely on Linux and Windows for their x86 server lines. Sun has won x86 Solaris commitments from Oracle, Veritas, BMC Software, EMC Legato, Sybase and Computer Associates.
