The next time a service employee from Sun Microsystems comes to your data center, he may be sporting a new Palm Treo smart phone.
That's because Palm is expected to announce a deal next week under which it will supply about 600 of Sun's U.S. technical staff with its popular mobile devices, CNET News.com has learned. The phones were ordered to help the staff keep in touch with help desk requests at any time of day.
The exact model being shipped to Sun is unknown. Palm sells the Treo 600 and a Treo 650 through a variety of wireless providers. Both models are compatible with Sun's server room software and its Java-based applications.
Sun said it will use Asurion, a wireless-management company out of Tennessee, to be in charge of the smart phones. Asurion will take care of the various wireless accounts, as well as rental, inventory management and overnight replacement.
The news comes hot on the heels of Palm's announcing it supplied 225 Treo smart phones to SanDisk's executive, sales, IT and operations staff in the United States, Asia, Europe and Israel.
