Start-up eyes server clusters

Start-up Foundry Networks has targeted clusters of server systems for its line of high-speed networking equipment.

Adding its own take to a potentially lucrative niche, the gigabit-speed firm released a new switching device called ServerIron that, when connected to a group of servers, can parse loads across several systems as needed.

The device can act as a load-balancing mechanism for Web traffic or email, for example. The function highlights a trend among start-up networking companies as the various firms try to augment products with unique features.

Another gigabit start-up, Alteon Networks, has crafted a niche as a provider of networking equipment optimized for server farms. Several others have joined the market as well.

The ServerIron switch, available immediately with prices starting at $6,295, offers 8- or 16-port models, with options to add both Fast and Gigabit Ethernet links.
