'Star Wars' game draws crowd

LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment announced they have signed up more than 275,000 subscribers for "Star Wars Galaxies" since the game debuted two months ago. "Galaxies," an online role-playing game based on the "Star Wars" movie series, was in development for years and has been closely watched by the games industry as a test of whether subscription-based games can attract a more mainstream audience.

The quick uptake for "Galaxies," which survived a rocky public debut, cements Sony's position as the leading force in pay-to-play online games. The company also publishes the hit fantasy game "EverQuest."
