Less than 2 inches thick and weighing 2.6 pounds, the screens are free of flicker, static, and radiation and offer a larger viewing area than standard CRT monitors. For example, a 15-inch CRT offers only about 13.5 inches of viewing area, while a 15-inch LCD provides the full 15 inches.
The company will show off the screens for the first time at the PC Expo convention in New York next month.
The 12.1-inch models have active matrix, SVGA displays and a high resolution of 800 by 600 pixels. The 14-, 15-, and 17-inch models have resolutions of up to 1,280 by 1,024 pixels.
Portability does not come cheap, however. Prices range from $1,999 for the 12.1-inch proprietary model to $9,995 for the 17-inch direct-drive version.
Sceptre has also just released a new multimedia notebook computer, the Soundx 4000, which features a 12.1-inch screen, SVGA display, 133-MHz Pentium processor, and 6x CD-ROM. The price for the notebook ranges from $5,200 to $5,500.
