Sprint sells satellite cable TV
Sprint on Tuesday began selling satellite TV to its local phone customers, as it tries to fend off similar moves by other local phone companies. The Sprint service, which costs between $30 and $80 a month, is available in the 18 markets where Sprint sells local phone service, a spokeswoman said. Verizon, Qwest Communications International and SBC also sell satellite TV to their local phone customers.
The Bells have watched cable companies slowly chip away their bedrock local phone business. Last year, the Bells began discounting their DSL (digital subscriber line) services to hold onto their phone customers and prevent new customers from turning to cable.
